Publisher's Summary

A breathtaking, enchanting new series by debut Australian author Jessica Townsend, about a cursed girl who escapes death and finds herself in a magical world - but is then tested beyond her wildest imagination.

Morrigan Crow is cursed. Born on an unlucky day, she is blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks - and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on Eventide. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears. Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor.

It's there that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city's most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society. In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart. Except for Morrigan, who doesn't seem to have any special talent at all.

To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests - or she'll have to leave the city to confront her deadly fate.

a terrifically whimsical story.

ive seen this book being billed as the net Harry Potter, and while being quite differnt from Harry Potter, i Honestly think it deserves just as much success. and i can see someome turning this story into a movie or a TV series in the near future.

the story is intriguing amd captivating, with charming and quirky charcters that you'll just fall inlove with. set in a world unlike anything ive encountered before just makes me want to dive in and learn more about it.

and the narration was well done (although i found one of voices she used particularly annoying, but it was charcter that didnt show up that much so i didnt mind that much).

Wonderful

I loved this book. To reacquaint myself with it for a presentation I listened to the audio book. It was beautifully read by Gemma Whelan. She managed to differentiate between characters with lovely accents. They were different to the ones I’d created in my head as I read the book, but they worked so well. The cliff hanger ending to each chapter was only enhanced by the little bits of music that were put there.
This is a lovely book about finding family, making friends and uncovering secrets and mysteries. The characters are strong and complex; there is no straight black and white. Positive personal traits are important. This is a good thing for young readers as it makes the characters seem real, even in their fantasy world.
Nevermoor is set in a fantasy world which slowly unfolds as the story does. The unfamiliar becomes familiar with each passing chapter and the reader finds themselves enclosed in a place they don’t want to leave. Jessica Townsend knows how to keep the reader enthralled and wanting just one more chapter.
Morrigan is said to be cursed and the reason for every bad thing that happens in Jacklifax. Her father is a member of the government and is not happy with his daughter. Her stepmother likes her less. She is due to die at midnight on the eve of her 11th birthday but for the intervention of Jupiter North. He whisks her off to Nevermoor, a place she has never heard of, but she can’t stay unless she passes four trials and becomes a member of the Wunder Society. Morrigan worries that she really is cursed and that she is just delaying the inevitable fate of all cursed children.
There is going to be a second book and I can’t wait until it arrives.

love it

this book is great to read, but it's awesome to listen to. Gemma is one of my favourite narrators because of her performance in this book. each character has its own voice and is captivating. I've been listening to this on a loop since I purchased it.
