Publisher's Summary

Billions died during the global civil war that followed the outbreak. Anarchy took grip. Chaos ruled. The world collapsed. In Britain, the evacuation failed. Nowhere was safe from the undead.

Four months after the outbreak Bill Wright has found safety in a ruined abbey in southern England, but he is still alone. All he has for company are the files sent to him by his shadowy contact, Sholto. On those, he believes he has found the origins of the undead, and the vast conspiracy in which he discovers he played an unwitting part.

He needs answers, and knows the only place they will be found is at the facility that created the virus. As he journeys through the desolate ruins of a dead civilisation, he meets other survivors. He rescues some, is rescued by others, but ultimately discovers that zombies are not the most deadly threat in an undead wasteland.

Better than the first.

Any additional comments?

What a great series! I was able to immediately start book 3. The narration is perfect.

😮

This series popped up on Facebook. I have never read a zombie/end of the world book in my life. But honey let me tell you!! The zombies are there but they are not the main focus. It’s about the human interaction and how each character feed off each other to learn or strike. The ending to this book is why the title of this review is this 😮.

wierd audio changes?

Like the story over all. sometimes sounds like 2-3 different people reading the same character. This story is a nice change from the grizzled super commandos that usually fight the ZA. It shows that people in crisis are pretty much useless, whiney, and selfish. There will be some good people but they will suffer. like the turn at the end. I want to see what happens next. Not every ZA story needs to have gore in it. The stories are never really about the Zombies. They are about people living it in.

Better but...

I find myself bothered by how sniveling, weak, and useless most of the characters are. This book contains more action and a little more oomph than the first book. The main character has seemed to grow, though. The plot twists are nice.

Great series

I had to reevaluate my opinion on this book. I decided to continue with the story and I really have enjoyed how the story and the characters have developed. This series is now in the teens and I’m still listening. I recommend it.

Book Two - more zombies and people in the UK

Picking up where we left off this is the adventure of the ordinary Bill who is not your normal post apocalyptic survivalist nut but a rather normal civil servant (or so it seems). The character development is a major factor for my 5* rating and the movement from an isolated survivor into a populated world is excellent. If you want a UK version of a zombie novel then this is it - but start from the beginning of the series.

Hurrah it's set in Britain!

Nice to see a story set in that little known island nation. I like this series so far, it's like I'm sat on the shoulder of the main character cheering him on. The narrator is a cheery guy, easy to listen to. And he is reading a good story too. Though with all vaccination/virus/plague type things there is the risk of breaking the universe (in my eyes at least). Either in this book or the first one - might be the end of the first one, I don't recall. Plot armour. It makes my teeth hurt. Sure he isn't immortal, but come ooooon

Not as good as the first but still good

This chapter continues right from where the first finishes, it starts well and strong and as expected but soon becomes messy and clunky. With the introduction of new characters and voices the diary journal format goes out the window sacrificing the simple story narrative for something that does not quite work well.
The conversational pieces just do not work and it is just unnecessary, a real shame but still a good story and it does manage to keep you wanting more. I am worried about where the story will go as I fear it will be too complex and perhaps suffer the same fate as the walking dead.
Would have been Mitch better to keep it the simple journal format and different from the rest although diary of the dead wins on that format.

Awesome

A lot going on for a zombie story, theres friction and action and suspense and intrigue. Too many annoying women arguing all the time but hey, at least thats realistic i spose

Good, but not as good as the first one

As contemporary apocalypses go, Surviving the Evacuation remains head-and-shoulders above most of the genre. Tayell's hero (if that's the right word) has to deal with the real problems of living in the end-times; not how much ammunition he can scavenge from a military depot (as if), but how to make tea from lemonade, or how to use a wok as a fire pit.

This installment has more survivors than the last one, and they are all equally screwed up and traumatised, as we should expect. They don't necessarily get on, but there are none of the ridiculous armed stand-offs that we get in many stories of this sort.

For all it's good features, however, I didn't think this book as as good as the first in the series. Some of the situations that the characters get themselves into seem a bit, well, improbable. The ending, which I won't give away, seems _highly_ improbable.

I'm hoping that book 3 will show a return to form; but book 2 is still a pretty decent read.

very confusing book order but awsome

very confused by the messy book ordering in this series causing great frustration at time and purchase of wrong book as a result but after that the book itself is another one of those you can't bare to put down. great plot full of twists and turns especially the ending and characters so very likeable or hateable in some cases of course. well written definitely recommend this series. best book so far.
