Publisher's Summary

A realm of monsters. A world of lies. She belongs to both.

My name is Emberly, and everything I’ve ever been told is a lie.

Monsters don’t exist. Wrong.

The nightmarish spectrum world is just my imagination. Wrong.

In a few months, I’ll finally be free. Wrong.

It takes being dragged to a secret training academy in the mountains to unravel the truth. My captors - an elite race of angel-born warriors called Nephilim.

The deadliest of them all is an arrogant shape shifter, Steel. He’s gorgeous, lethal, hot-headed...and convinced I’ll be the death of them all.

Maybe he’s right. As soon as I show up, the monsters that have haunted me my entire life breach the academy walls. My only hope of saving my new friends is learning how to control my powers, but when a stunning betrayal hurts someone I care about, I have an impossible choice.

Stay and fight for a place to belong...or decide once and for all that I’m better off alone.

Enter the spectrum world, a realm in-between worlds where shadow beasts draw blood, reality is a maze of twisted lights and sounds, and life goals are whittled down to just one: survive.

Fans of Jennifer L. Armentrout and Cassandra Clare will love this Crescent City meets Crave mash up!

The Queen Strikes Again

After the Life After series was complete, I wondered what Julie would do next and whether it would be as good. Silly me. Of course it was. Her latest series Fallen Legacies has everything you could want. Romance. Action. Intrigue. Fantastic world building. It also ups the creep factor. By a lot. There were some parts that gave me serious heebie jeebies. But the rest of it was good enough to make me put on my brave face and soldier on.

What I really want to know is where she found such amazing narrators. With a book like this, a mediocre narrator is all it takes to kill the illusion of being part of the fantasy. But that is definitely not a problem here. This is professional level voice work (and as someone who watches a lot of anime, I know what bad voice work sounds like) and it totally draws you into the story.

Great job once again, girl. Can't wait to see where you go with it.

A must listen

I absolutely love this book, but having it brought to life is another thing entirely! I loved Vanessa Moyen (as usual), and was pleased with Adam Gold, as well! This was my first time listening to him, and he did a fantastic job! Emberly has entered a world she didn't know existed, and meets quite the group of characters! I highly recommend this! The adventure, humor and touch of slow-burn, enemies-to-lovers-ish is sure to keep you engaged throughout! I can't wait to listen to Forging Darkness!

Non Stop Epicness

All the stars and then some more!! This is hands down one of the best books I’ve read it was unputdownable. The world building and plot went together seamlessly. It starts off full of adrenaline and doesn’t slow down.

I can’t wait to see what awaits Emberly, I feel like we just started to crack the shell of this amazing MC & she’s an awkward but self-reliant badass who doesn’t know the first thing about who she really is.

Familiar with a new twist!

Entertaining, time flew while listening. Great recommendation from audible. Coming of age but she isn't ignorant. Alpha male but he doesn't control her and she isn't attracted to his control.

Captivating!

I could NOT turn it off & pulled an all-nighter!
Mystery & magic & wings! Enemies to possible lovers!
The heroine is living on streets in the beginning, but finds her people in a kidnapping/attack... and they just so happen to have wings! One defender not only protects her, but turns her hormones upside down... she can't decide whether to fall for him, or kill him.
She develops friendships for the first time in her life, but then can't decide whether it's worth it to open up... what to do when having friends means putting them in danger?
This was a fantastic book 1 in a series & I 👏can't 👏wait 👏for 👏Forging👏 Darkness!

Vanessa Gold did a good job with the emotions and intensity of the story, and Adam Gold, in the epilogue, portrayed a great Steel... can't wait for him to have more time in Forging Darkness!

I received an ALC from an author, promotor, or publisher, and I chose to leave a review.

All the stars to this amazing audiobook!

Can I give this book more than five stars?! That's what this book needs! It has everything that I love in a book. Excellent characters, a school setting, and a plot that kept me interested from start to finish. I thought I loved the print version of this book, but man, hearing it narrated just made the whole story come to life!

Our MC is Emberly, she's a bit different and a loner. She has episodes where she gets anxious and dips into what she calls "the spectrum". It's like this world, but brighter. She sees auras there. She knows she's different. She's been bounced from foster home to foster home and finally decided to hit the streets on her own.

Some big guys show up and try to take her away. They know her name and know she's different. Then the dude turns into a lion right in front of her eyes and she loses it. She fights back and they end up getting her anyway.

She wakes up at Seraph Academy and is told everyone there is like her. But she's still an anomaly even among her own people. The rest of the story is monsters coming for her and her trying to figure out what the hell Steel's problem is.

Why are the Forsaken hunting her? Why must she be the anomaly? And what the heck is Steel's problem?!

I cannot rave about this book enough

Honestly, I really enjoyed this book. The narrator does an excellent job. The story is captivating and funny. I loved the world building. I really have a soft spot for the Twins (Greyson and Sterling) and especially their interactions with Emberly. Not to mention Emberly is really easy to like and root for. I loved this listen- just jump in you won't be disappointed.

Fun to see the characters brought to life :)

I don't usually listen to the audiobook of a story I've already read as an ebook, but since I Loved this story so much, I couldn't pass up the chance to see it brought to life (read: I'll mainly be reviewing the narrator's performance, not so much the story).

It was really fun to see the characters brought to life and have some of my favorites scenes being (voice) acted (the gym fighting scene is one of my favs). Now, a couple of issues I had were that Emberly's voice took me a while to get used to (though I eventually did), and I wasn't completely sold on Deacon's voice. Also, I always have an issue when characters are yelling, since most of the time it seems as if they're hoarse/stage whispering (but I think that's a pet peeve of mine).

Still, these issues notwithstanding, I really loved Ash and Tinkle's voices, as well as being able to tell apart Greyson and Sterling (most of the time), though I also found it funny that, to me, Nova sounded like the female version of Sterling (at least in the beginning). Oh, and Vanessa's nuances and portrayal of emotions for the rest of the story (from sarcasm and whispers to hurt, vulnerability, and just Emberly's inner monologue) were definitely on point.

As for Adam, that epilogue is just a teaser of his abilities, but based on it, I could listen to him all day long, which makes me all the more excited to see him narrate Steel's POV chapters in Forging Darkness. ~4.5 stars

Enchanting

This is a brilliant and exciting start to a new series. The fantastic writing really brings the characters and their world to life and captures your attention making it difficult to stop listening from the very beginning.

The narration is a joy to listen to and easily transports you to another world.

Very enjoyable start to the series!

I really enjoyed listening to the audio version of Stealing Embers! The narration is very well done for the most part, although it was a bit fast for my taste in some places. I definitely still enjoyed the story, and the narrator does a very good job of voicing the different characters.

The story is interesting and well written. I particularly enjoyed the world building and learning about the different kinds of Nephilim and magic! I also really enjoyed Ember’s character as well as Ash. Steel is a major jerk in this book but maybe he’ll turn around yet. I found some of the dialogue annoying at times when the author used modern slang/juvenile language but sometimes it was funny so it wasn’t all bad. Overall I really enjoyed this book and I’m looking forward to the sequel!

AMAZING STORY 👏

"I'll accept a wide variety of suffering to hold on to my freedom. "

"On a bad day I'm a lot of things, but dumb isn't usually one of them."

"With a shake of my head, I shatter my unease. I don't have room for frivolous emotions right now. Fear gets you dead."

This is an INCREDIBLE story that is so hard to put down. Like I skipped my nap time to read it...and I'm a professional napper ya'll. The characters are so loveable. Beautiful, rich descriptions. Pulse, pounding action. Romantic tension. Enemies to lovers anyone?🙌🏻 Hilarious dialogue. Slap yourself in the face moments. ...ugh, so much good stuff.

Our MC Emberly is actually a homeless orphan. 🤯 Did not expect that. (It's not a spoiler bc you find this out on page 1.) It adds some fun quirks to her character.

One of the characters gives me Cate vibes from The Darkest Minds. If you've seen the movie she's played by Mandy Moore.

Steel (our enemy love interest) is one tough, sexy, brooding beast🦁

Her friend Sterling is the epitome of a hot, funny, super flirty dude. He's one of my favorite characters.

Love Emberly's gal pal, Ash. I love when authors include a really great friendship.

I love Emberly's little gang. They're all so much fun with their own personalities. They're very relatable, very real.

Definitely, definitely, definitely READ THIS BOOK!
.
The Narrators are freaking fantastic!! Vanessa Moyen is one of my top favorites and Adam Gold makes a perfect Steel 👌 🦁

So good

Emberly was told monsters don’t exist , her nightmare realm was just in her mind then she finds out it’s all real. After years of hiding and keeping herself safe she’s dragged to a secret training academy to find out the truth of who and what she is.
Absolutely loved this book I stayed up all night listening and I can’t wait for book 2. Vanessa Moyen narrates perfectly and I enjoyed Adam Gold although I would have loved more from him.
