Publisher's Summary

In Northwestern Vermont, young Bobby Cutts enters the family barn and encounters a nightmare. Surrounded by bolts of fire, Bobby and the entire herd perish in a stampeding circle of flames. Called to the scene to investigate, Joe Gunther instantly recognizes arson. But by whom? And why? Gunther quickly discovers that someone is wreaking havoc across the bucolic farmlands surrounding the town of St. Albans. Somewhere in the dense social fabric of the community, in the hearts and souls of Bobby's family, and in the cutthroat farming business underneath the region's placid exterior are the truths his team must ferret out. But what looked like a local case is about to take them from the barns of Vermont to the gritty streets of Newark, New Jersey. Before all is said and done, Joe Gunther will meet one of his deadliest opponents to date...and he will need far more than his skills as a policeman to protect the people closest to his heart.

Narration more than performance

I miss Tom Taylorson. This felt like some high school teacher reading to you instead of an audio book performance

A new narrator style is distracting

I really enjoy the Joe Gunther series, but the newest narrator’s style is so distracting that i eventually had to increase the speed of play to “quiet” the affectations of the reader.

Narrating

The story was great but the audio book was not narrated by Tom Taylorson. If the other audio books were read by Graybill, I wouldn't have bought the other books. Why did you change? Taylorson has the right voice that keeps your attention.

Missed Tom

Unfortunately I was not able to make it past the first hour. I tried. Have listen to the whole series. I just could not except the reader for this book. May be fine with other books but he did not capture Joe Gunther at all. I skipped forward to the next book where Tom is the reader.

Why, Archer?!

I’ve been all in on this series and then BAM - ole Christopher comes on the scene. I struggled through it to keep up with Joe’s life, but holy bananas. I couldn’t tell you if the story itself was masterful or lost like a game of the Price is Right’s Cliffhanger.
Advice for readers: if you love this series, skip this book, ask for spoilers, and skip to The Second Mouse to be reunited with our beloved Tom Taylorson!

Senior ?

The shift in narrator this far into the series was a bit jarring. The narration of Joe immediately evoked Robert Wagner's portrayal of Anthony Dinozo Senior in NCIS. Whether it was that, a shift in the writing, or a lack of empathy in the delivery, it was the first time I felt Joe was a complete and disconnected idiot in his interactions with Gail.

Narration aside, the endings in this Series always feel abrupt to me. It feels like an overused device that works better in short stories than novels.

That being said, on to the next with Taylorson back. :)

Ding dong!!!

Finally a reprieve!!

This narrator, trying to make Joe sound the same, made him sound like a cartoon version of himself. Does women's voices well, though.

Couldn’t get with the change in readers. Not Joe.

I couldn’t get past the different readers. Didn’t sound like the characters after having listened to all the other books.
