Publisher's summary

A spiritual wellness guide, Spirited shows you how to find more fulfillment and peace in modern life by applying timeless Buddhist wisdom.

Beneath Candice Kumai’s polished image as a wellness icon, she was tormented by anxiety, competitiveness and deep inner suffering. It wasn’t until she re-embraced the Buddhist principles she’d been taught in childhood that she began to change her life for the better—even making a pilgrimage to her mother’s home country of Japan to study in the mountains with Buddhist monks.

Full of wisdom and raw honesty, Spirited recounts her journey and shares the Buddhist practices that transformed her life so you can, too.

"Candice Kumai is the wellness & spiritual teacher for the next generation, a PIONEER of her time." (Dr. Andrew Weil, founder/director of the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine)

Life-Changing Read

Spirited outdid my expectations. I loved how open and honest the book was, it felt like Candice was speaking directly to me. As a college aged woman, many of the topics Candice touched on from her own personal experiences are things I am currently facing, and to hear her perspective on how she overcame these hardships as a young woman is empowering. I think women of all ages should give this book a listen, thank you Candice for sharing your wisdom with us all.

Candice Does it Again.

This may be my favorite Candice Kumai book to date, it feels like I am listening to a wise friend over a (former coffee) matcha tea. If you have ever wanted or tried to learn about Buddhism but struggled with the ancient verbiage, this modern twist will have you feeling zen in no time.
Do I hear a Spirited Podcast coming soon?

Vulnerable, witty, and SO needed

I've read (listened to?) 3 of Candice's books now, and this one is by far my favorite! Spirited's predecessor, Kintsugi Wellness, set the stage by exploring the intersection of food and wellness; in Spirited, Candice dives DEEP into her past, her darkest moments, and the spiritual pilgrimage that helped her overcome.

The wellness industry has faced a lot of scrutiny recently for inauthenticity, thought leaders that seem out of touch, and solutions that seem to solve nothing at all. Have no fear, Spirited is here! How can we look back into our culture, our heritage, and truly develop a mentality to help us survive in today's world? Candice answers this question by peeling back the curtains, and inviting the listeners on her journey overcoming depression, addiction, and so much more. This is a breath of fresh air that the industry, and it's constituents, truly need.

I hope Spirited sets a new precedent for wellness books, shows, etc. to explore the true darkness of people's experiences and advocates for practices that can help all of us heal. 10/10!

Candice Shows Immense Bravery

This book is such a gift. Candice is a spiritual practitioner with her own pain-cycles and her own family's pain. How very brave she is to share her painful story. She should be an inspiration to all. There of course will be nasty one star reviews on here. Please read this: Calling Candice an "actress" and judging her pain and her struggles - how miserable are some of these women who comment like this?-- Bless you- because you didn't understand her pain & you choose to judge someone you don't know. Candice don't listen to these haters on one star reviews, they are merely showing a reflection of themselves. GO Candice!! and GO female authors! - I will always support women, brave women and all women and their bravery! Let's uplift other women as Candice does! Thank you Candice for sharing your story, a lot of us could learn a lot from this.

Just what my soul needed

I’ve been a fan of Candice from meeting her during our Bar Method workouts in NYC to her cookbooks to her podcast.. I feel like her audio book came at the perfect time in my life when I needed to hear these life talks from an old barre buddy.
I had been struggling a lot myself since leaving NYC, and finding my way, carving my path, balancing life, meanwhile caring for my mental health, family, work, friends, and new life in a new city. It was all becoming too much for me. I was spiraling.
I’m subscribed to Candice’s newsletter and learned of this audio book through that. It came at the time when my soul needed this the most. I am SO grateful. I feel like Candice and I have similar struggles with mental health, finances, friendships, growing up with mixed cultures.. and this book has spoken so deeply to my heart.
But beyond my own things— I feel like Spirited is a wonderful reminder of the fundamental basics that make the human race and people a loving society.
Candice’s story telling is lovely and fun and entertaining. I remember when we’d talk after Bar Method, she was always a warm and kind girlfriend.
This audiobook is as if your best friend is talking heart to heart with you. I love that so much. It’s a lot of real talk. Practices on being introspective and things to really be mindful of, things to consider and understand the gravity that certain things play on our every day. I highly recommend Spirited to anyone in this modern day who just wants to be reminded of what we can do to focus on what’s most important in life. They have become such great tips and useful tools that I am so grateful for!! Thanks, Candice!!! For going from the locker room of Bad Method in Soho to my ear pods and voice during me commute driving to and from work. I love Spirited so much. So grateful that you shared this audio with us!!!

Soothing + Inspiring.

I always seem to come back to Candice’s books. Kintsugi Wellness got me through a difficult time years back and I still treasure the beautiful book on a special shelf in my home. Spirited has the same energy and closeness to it…but goes even deeper as Candice shares even more intimately with her readers. I love the wholeness of her writing…featuring themes of family, ancestry, spirituality, religion, wellness, mental health, nutrition, community, and more. It feels like a book about a full life…with all the ups and downs that comes with. Thank you, Candice, for this book. It is a treasure of depth…a salve for us during a time where most things stay only surface-level.

Excellent narration & inspiring words!

I sometimes listen to audiobooks on my commute to work, but often have a hard time finding a book I want to listen to- even if the book itself is great, the narration doesn’t do it for me. Candice’s book is 10/10 for me for both the wise and inspiring words and the engaging, clear, & warm narration style, which is literally the best narration I’ve heard of any audiobook I’ve listened to! I re-signed up to Audible just for this book, and am hoping she releases more audiobooks and/or narrates others’ books in the near future!!
