Publisher's summary
Something lives in the darkness … something with teeth.
Seventeen-year-old Krescent Dune is buried under the weight of her dead parents’ debt and the ruinous legacy they left behind. The only way she can earn enough money to escape her unforgiving island is by battling monstrous creatures in an underground fighting pit.
After a fight goes terribly wrong, she’s banned from the pits. Now hopeless, she is offered a deal: in exchange for the erasure of her debts, she must join and protect a hunting party for a rescue mission deep within the mining caves beneath the island.
Krescent is determined to keep her head down and fulfill her role as the dutiful bodyguard, even though she is trapped underground with her childhood enemy and a company of people who would gladly kill her if they knew who her parents were. As the group comes across creatures she believed only existed in legends, it becomes clear they are in far more danger than she could have imagined.
But someone doesn’t want her to make it out alive. And she’ll have to figure out who before she’s left alone … in the dark.
"Somewhere in the Deep is packed with heart-pounding fights against vicious monsters. Kress is a reluctant heroine who is easy to cheer for as she claws her way out of the death pits and encounters unfathomable horrors in the depths below. A thrilling and imaginative read!"- Judy I. Lin, #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Book of Tea duology

Story
Lan spends her nights as a songgirl in Haak’gong, a city transformed by the Elantian colonizers. Her days are consumed by the search for knowledge about the strange mark—an untranslatable Hin character—burned into her arm by her mother in her last act before she died. Zen is a practitioner—one of the fabled magicians of the Last Kingdom. He’s never seen anything like Lan’s mark, but he knows that if there are answers, they lie deep in the pine forests and misty mountains of the Last Kingdom, with an order of practitioning masters planning to overthrow the Elantian regime.

Story
Liska knows that magic is monstrous, and its practitioners are monsters. She has done everything possible to suppress her own magic, to disastrous consequences. Desperate to be free of it, Liska flees her small village and delves into the dangerous, demon-inhabited spirit-wood to steal a mythical fern flower. If she plucks it, she can use its one wish to banish her powers. Everyone who has sought the fern flower has fallen prey to unknown horrors, so when Liska is caught by the demon warden of the wood—called The Leszy—a bargain seems better than death.

Could have been really good.
World building was crap, narrator was horrendous and so stilted. Disappointing overall and very slow in the beginning, then sped up and tried to get more interesting but I was already bored and didn't care any longer. Finished the book to finish, not because I was enjoying it.
