Publisher's summary

A new home. A new destiny.

All Lanna wants is to find peace in a tiny village on the edge of the empire. The imperial people offer her opportunities she’s never dared to dream of. Enchanted by her new home, she agrees to a betrothal. But her life is turned upside-down when Lanna draws the attention of a noblewoman from the distant First City.

Lanna is forced to travel to the palace at the heart of the empire. There, she must deal with court power games, a spiteful nemesis, and a fickle emperor. Yet all is not as it seems in this place of silk and luxury, and Lanna faces the biggest decision of her life. One that could change the fate of the whole empire.

Snowblind is a captivating fantasy with complex characters and dramatic intrigue. Not suitable for younger listeners.

An intriguing twist on fantasy

Though I can understand why some might think the book starts slightly slow I enjoyed the character building and soft world building that began right from the start. The main character Lanna is a young woman who has real flaws, and as a result comes off as very believable, this was to my mind a really refreshing difference right away. The author also includes a mix of real world cultures and ideas into a fantasy setting that goes beyond the typical Tolkien style, specifically pretty much all but the main character is based on Asian stylings. I don't wish to spoil anything through the review, but a good way into the book the fantasy setting steers even more away from the typical and starts to include some light scifi elements as well. I really enjoyed this story, it was unique and interesting, and I look forward to the sequel.
