A Very Satisfying Crossover!

I thoroughly enjoyed this crossover between Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes universe and Bram Stoker's Dracula. It is told in the same format as Stoker's work, but with Dr. Watson's letters and notes interspersed with the journal and diary entries of the other characters. Mina Murray employs Holmes and Watson to find the missing Jonathan Harker. They travel to Transylvania and have their own nasty encounter, and this puts them on the trail of Count Dracula.

One might expect that Holmes and Watson would join forces with Van Helsing and company, but quite the opposite is true, and here is the great delight of this novel. The reader gets to see both sets of characters from the not always complimentary perspectives of the other. I particularly enjoyed how Watson's fierce brand of personal loyalty and dedication to medicine opposes Van Helsing's -- and saves the day (and ultimately humankind).

I am a great fan of both Conan Doyle and Stoker, and I've reread the Holmes canon and Dracula quite recently. Sherlock Holmes and the Plague of Dracula provides a clever combination of both with a satisfyingly rational conclusion. One word: Science!

Ric Jerrom's handling of the different characters and accents was terrific.

An enjoyable addition to the current Holmes canon

An enjoyable addition to the current unofficial Holmes canon that includes the supernatural. if you enjoyed Saberhagen's take on Holmes as part of his Dracula series or other fiction depicting the famous deducator with supernatural highlights, then do add this story to your library. This plot puts Holmes and Watson into Stoker's story. Entertaining to the end.

It combines Dracula and Sherlock's two greatest adventures into one, first skeptical but satisfying ending

Way better than it has any right to be!

I’ve been reading all of the famous Holmes stories and have found myself resistant to the supernatural pastiches and drawn to more sober fare like The West End Horror, House of Silk, and the Murder of Mary Russell. This book was a lovely exception as it makes a mashup between Doyle and Stoker as intelligently and dramatically successful as possible by not forcing Holmes and Watson to become humbled disciples of Van Helsing (as other crossovers often do). The end result is some great vampire scenes not featured in the novel Dracula, quirky and fannish meditations on Jeremy Brett’s post-Final Problem screen presence, and a book that *almost* manages to feel *canonical* (while being delightfully outrageous). I couldn’t do any better coming up with a plot to match such an explosive premise and few others could, either.

It could have been better.

There was a strong potential with this story but alas it just falls flat.
It had all the makings of something great, almost like a movie that had you wanting more with great interweavings of these two stories by two arthors merging together. However the writer basically couldn't deliver and gave up, only writing something akin to keeping it together just to finish it and left character to go wondering off to go do their own thing.
I recommend it only as a "if you want to listen to this, be my guest". It's a let down and forgettable.
