Meet Egyptologist Amelia Peabody in the first mystery in the Victorian-era, New York Times-bestselling series.

"If Indiana Jones were female, a wife, and a mother who lived in Victorian times, he would be Amelia Peabody Emerson."—
Publishers Weekly

Amelia Peabody, that indomitable product of the Victorian age, embarks on her first Egyptian adventure armed with unshakable self-confidence, a journal to record her thoughts, and, of course, a sturdy umbrella. On her way, Amelia rescues young Evelyn Barton-Forbes, who has been “ruined” and abandoned on the streets of Rome by her rascally lover. With a typical disregard for convention, Amelia promptly hires her fellow countrywoman as a companion and takes her to Cairo.

Eluding Evelyn’s former lover, who wants her back, and Evelyn’s cousin Lord Ellesmere, who wishes to marry her, the two women sail up the Nile to an archaeological site that is home to a rather lively mummy. Soon strange visitations, suspicious accidents, and a botched kidnapping convince Amelia that there is a plot afoot to harm Evelyn.

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

It wouldn't be at the top of the list. While interesting, the "mystery" is quite obvious and the romance, predictable.

Would you be willing to try another book from Elizabeth Peters? Why or why not?

Not really She captured the self sufficient, righteous and superior Victorian too well but takes her seriously. I would not identify with or like most of the characters.

Very Victorian

Both the writer and the narrator make this whole series a spectacular listen. Even my husband laughed his way thru this first one while travelling in a car.

I continue to enjoy Peters books but had not read the beginning story. Loved it! I enjoy audio even more as I can relax, close my eyes, and be swept away into the lives of Amelia and Radcliffe's adventures and relationship.

Great first book in the series

I love reading historical novel about ancient Egypt and adding the mystery and suspense to it was better than even watching an action movie on TV. Her choice of words and style are remarkable. Have to read it or listen to it yourself to understand. I'm definitely reading the rest of the series.

What did you love best about Crocodile on the Sandbank?

A fairly historically accurate mystery series set in Egypt with a female main character who battles the stereotypes of gender.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

The plot develops with twist and turns. As you get further into the book you are drawn deeper into the plot like a fly on a spider's web. one strand at a time!

What about Susan O'Malley’s performance did you like?

Easy voice to listen to...and the fact that the main character is female, her voice fit perfectly.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The conclusion of the book left me hungry for the second in the series.

Mummies, Tombs, Murder and Mystery.

The story concerns Amelia Peabody, an unmarried woman in the Victorian period, who decides to take a trip to Egypt. If you can imagine a feminist during this time period, you'll have some idea of her adventures. Listening to her argue with an outspoken man she meets is pure delight. This is the first in a series of books about Amelia, but I listened to this one three times before moving on because I couldn't imagine another book being this much fun.

Lots of fun

I've read this book before but when I saw that it was free on audio with my subscription I decided to enjoy it again. I had totally forgotten the denouement so the mystery was fresh for me. Peabody's character is so well portrayed by the narrator I think I enjoyed it more the second time than I did the first.

great story, perfectly narrated

These books by Elizabeth Peters are really enjoyable fun! If you love Egypt and want to learn a few things while you follow the story of the Peabody/Emerson family join the party, you won’t regret it!

Excellent Series

What a fun book! Amelia Peabody, who is off to Egypt in the 1890s, a rare accomplishment for a woman, meets up with Evelyn Barton-Forbes, a "fallen" woman, and rescues her, taking her with her on her explorations. Amelia is independently wealthy and doesn't give two hoots what anyone thinks 😊. She refreshingly witty and I liked her immediately. They meet up with two brother archeologists on a dig at Amarna, as well as a walking mummy! With plenty of dangers and obstacles, the four work together, forging a close bond. I look forward to more in the series.
