Publisher's summary

Mataio (Matt) Faafetai Malietoa Brown offers the men in his barbershop a haircut with a difference: a safe space to be seen and heard without judgement.

As the creator of My Fathers Barbers, Matt has inspired a new generation of New Zealand men to break free from the cycle of abuse - and those men have in turn inspired Matt and his wife, Sarah, to create the global anti-violence movement She Is Not Your Rehab.

In this book, Matt shares his own story and those of his clients: how they survived family violence and abuse, and how they were able to find healing and turn their lives around. He introduces the people and concepts that have helped him heal and gives listeners the tools they need to begin their own journeys.

She is Not Your Rehab demonstrates the power of vulnerability and honesty in addressing pain and shame, and shows how anyone can empower themselves by taking responsibility for their own healing.

Very Good Healing Resource

Comes at a time when there are needed resources for men! But there is also great advice for women! Very inspiring! I hope many find his words and kindness to be a healing balm.

Amazing

So true. This book speaks to why men mistreat women. Hiding all emotions with anger. Lack of proper coping mechanisms leads to generations of abuse and broken homes.

Confronting that little boy is hard

Gifted by my wife as a present that i chose. thoroughly enjoyed matt and sarahs story. Very suprised with how much of the content i could relate to my own child hood and adult life. Have gifted this title to another family member. I hope they get as much use out of it as i did

A must read for EVERY man

This book is incredible. I hope to be the kind of father one day that can pass on the messages in this book through example. I think any one would greatly benefit from reading this book, but especially men. If you only read 100 books in your life, make sure this one is on the list.

Speechless

This hits home so much. The issues that are addressed are shocking but they're also no surprise to me either, being a Pacific Islander growing up in NZ. It was even that much more personal having Matt read the book himself. At first I didn't realise this book targets a male audience, however, it didn't stop me as a female, to reflect on some of the traumas that I face within a relationship. 10/10, would read again and I'm at some point going to purchase a hardcover too just to have in the collection.

A breathe of hope and insight for men and women.

This should be called “they” are not your rehab. Because honestly, as a woman writing this review I can tell you that I found this book relevant and powerful. Not just to understand my partner and his burden but to also recognize my own.

I would say it’s impossible to get to the end of this book without having learned something about yourself or another. At times it was difficult to hear but I found those were the parts I need to listen to the closest.

If you’re interested in change I’d say this is a nice, straightforward place to start that journey.

Much thanks. <3

Powerful, Moving ... not what I expected!

If I'm honest, I was sceptical about reading this book, thinking that it would be a 'feel sorry for me because I abuse my wife' story but it is far from that. I thought I would give it a go and then stop a couple of listens in, however ...

Mataio (Matt) Faafetai Malietoa Brown is incredibly honest about his and other men's behaviour and poor treatment of others - mainly loved ones around them. Learning through his own journey to be able to deal with his own traumatic childhood, and through his barbershop in Aotearoa, Matt listens to his customers and offers his advice to the troubled souls that come for a haircut and so much more.

I cried at the heartbreak, nodded in agreement and laughed out loud at his and Sarah's (his wife's) frank and honest advice.

She is Not Your Rehab is hard-hitting but heartfelt. Although this book is aimed at men that are abusive to their loved ones - violent and non-violent - I think women should definitely read or listen to Matt and Sarah's words of wisdom, whether you are in or have experienced an abusive relationship, or indeed if you are the abuser or have witnessed the abuse being done. This book is very much about anti-violence and our negative behaviour, so we can all learn from it.

I listened to the audiobook version - great narration from Matt and his wife. If you read one book this year - make sure it's this one. So good!

So intense and confronting, sometimes I had to stop just to take in what I had just heard. I cried countless times but therapeutic tears.

Thank you 🙏

Thank you soo much for soo gently but impact fully sharing your story, your words have imprinted on me deeper than any korero I have sat or read through 💚
My story is not a story of domestic violence but is of a deep feeling of abandonment & rejection, my husband grew up in a alcohol, drug, domestic violence, poverty, lack of environment.
A reminder of the mahi I have done and the journey my husband is coming through, your courageous share means I understand him soo much more now, your sharing helped fill in the blanks my husband hasn't yet been able to share in detail that I soo desperately wanted to understand, I am genuinely grateful, your book is giving him hope, so again a heart felt thank you, arohatino nui 💚

Incredible book

An essential read for any man. Matt and Sarah’s incredible expression of vulnerability is nothing short of life changing. The lessons shared are simple yet potent. If you are someone is deeply affected by wounds from your past, this is a must read. Do it for the females in your life, do it for the children in your life… do it for yourself.
