A great read as always and thanks to having read all the other Sharpe novels Cornwell brings back some of the best characters for this book. Al always Sharpe gets the gal.

Another brilliant tale by a a master teller of tales. Even the abysmal narrator couldn’t ruin it .

Sharpe goes on

Sharpe goes on. The British are fighting on French soil. Sharpe is helping prepare for Bayonne. He spends a little time on boats and helps with bridge building.

Just not the same.

First… no one will ever replace Fredrick Davidson as narrator. He may not have given Sharpe strong accent, but his ability to give voice to more than 8 diff very distinctive voices. Farley’really only has 2 or 3. I listened to all his narrated Sharpe again & again. And still listen to the original dozen (published order) periodically.

Second, I love the first dozen published, but after Waterloo the stories slowly became more formulaic until by this time, its same old stuff in different dressing. He has completely lost the clarity & energy of the first dozen. What a shame. The last 2 have been so bad & ran it thru fast. I ESPECIALLY DISLIKED how he can’t keep the story straight. He & Jane were together & very tender in Sharpe’s Seige, & she hadn’t taken his money until Sharpe’s Tevenge. It drives me crazy. Very disappointed overall. I’ll just listen to the Fredrick Davidson again…
