Publisher's summary

Magic marked her for suffering. Magic will save her. Magic will lead her home.

On Tempris, time magic is outlawed, and suspected time mages are hunted. Humans are second-class citizens, shunned by the immortal fey that live on the island. They even have a name for their kind: Shardless.

Taly is one of the lucky humans. Taken in by a fey noble and his family, she's lived a good life, surrounded by people she loves. But when an accidental brush with magic causes her to see things - ghostly apparitions that give her small glimpses into the future - it has deadly consequences. The Sanctorum has returned to the island, and if they find her, they'll kill her. And anyone that tries to protect her.

This includes her best friend, Skye. He was the boy that saved her. The man she knew she could never have. And when he refuses to let her go, their actions might hold the power to reshape the world.

An ancient evil is rising, and in order to protect those that she cares for, Taly will have to sacrifice everything.

Including her heart.

Contains mature themes.

4 star that could have been a 5 star

This book either through the writing or through the perfection that is Elizabeth Evans, definitely ranks as one of the best books i have heard in a long while. However there are a few issues that kept throwing me off. They were so inconsistent to the flow of the rest of the book I would equate them to having a nice fun ride on a lazy river only to suddenly get struck by lightning. How do you get struck by lightning on a lazy river in the middle of a cloudless day? no idea, and that is how i feel about some of the weird turns this book took sometimes. They were so out of the ordinary and so illogical that they became ridiculous nonsense. All of these issues stem from Talia, the main character, and her inability to draw even the most basic of obvious conclusions. To be fair it's mostly do to the author trying to pad the suspense, but not realizing she has gone to far and now just makes her character seem kind of stupid at times. It gets very frustrating, and was so bad that i actually started sarcastically clapping when she finally made an assumption that was correct for a change. Course even though she was staring at the evidence in a reflection she still only kind of admitted the truth of the evidence. To put it simply talia is the very personification of the saying about Assumptions making people into asses. If you can get past shouting "What are you talking about!?" or "How the hell is that the conclusion you made?!" the book itself is pretty good for the most part. Just be warned you might need a mouth guard for how often you will be grinding your teeth and take plenty of breaks to cool down as to not give yourself an aneurism trying to figure out Tallia's leaps in logic.

Such a Lucky Find!! (Happy dance)

Not sure how I picked this book, but I love it! The world is unique and well-defined. The characters would make the book all by themselves: the “good guys” are so likable and real, act so naturally and are moved by very understandable motives, which in turn drive them to quite natural responses which in turn feed into the dilemmas that arise. No out-of-character behaviors forced to fit into the plot. I’m not even to the big troubles yet, and I want to protect them!
I’m so excited to find a book that I can sink into and not feel irritated by irrational or forced actions for the plot’s sake, or weird out-of-the blue motives. The story flows naturally.
It’s so enjoyable. The hard parts are harder because they make total sense. Those kind get to me the most.
I’m in a hurry to know what happens, but also want to take my time enjoying it. Sigh. Bliss.
In fact, I didn’t realize what I had at first, and want to start over so I didn’t miss anything. I usually blast through audiobooks for the good parts.
As for narration: it’s good! But I’ve become spoiled by the evolvement in past year or two of narration that creates more distinct differences in the male and female voices, and all voices I guess. Not the narrator’s fault, I’ve just gotten so spoiled.

Characters I actually like& a story I want more of

I really enjoyed this book. I wish the next one was coming out tomorrow, if not today, but alas I will have to wait.
I liked all of the characters, even the ones that seem to only have a line or two. I'm not sure how she accomplished it but even in those brief words for the side characters, I had an impression of each one.
For once the main characters relationship progression was nice. it would be hard for me to explain, but it felt right, wasn't rushed or stilted, and wasn't all kissy kissy.
As with the beginning of any new series, it took me a little bit to understand the layout of the world, but not to any extreme, and there is still plenty of room to expand.
Of course I still have lots questions, but I'm sure the majority will be answered in the upcoming books. I sincerely look forward to their release.
As for the narrator, I personally thought she did an excellent job and explore other books she has narrated.
I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did, and pass it along. I honestly had this for a while and can't believe I waited so long to listen.

I cannot stress how much you need to get this book

I got this audible because I love the narrator and WOW. I have not enjoyed a book this much since the Throne of Glass Series from Sarah J Maas (maybe even a little more than those books)
The cliff hanger at the end was so well made that I’m not mad at all but I cannot wait for the next book.
You will not regret getting this

Marshmallows to mayhem

Skye: “You’re weird, Tink.”
Talia: “I’d like to think I’m adorably quirky.”
This book was quirky and fresh from start to not-finish. I’m torn at having gotten books 1 and 2 when it’s been years and there’s still no book 3 (in a planned five book series). Ah well. It was a great enough listen that I can forgive the cliffhanger.

“How do you fit so much evil into such a tiny body?”
This is YA fantasy set in a Fae world with connections to other worlds through portals, including the mortal world where pistols, cinnamon and marshmallows exist. This gives the story a touch of an anime steampunk vibe, with greatcoats, crystal and ether powered guns, and scrying coms. For the most part, however, this is standard medieval fantasy. There’s mostly period appropriate exclamations like “shards,” but there are a handful of F bombs. The first two-thirds of the book features a budding romance between childhood friends as the magical mystery oh-so-slowly materializes. The nonsensical keeping of secrets tropes on both sides go on way too long, but at least these two are twenty somethings and there’s
no love triangle angst (also, no sex, at least not in this book, which strings things along with only kisses … the “contains mature themes” warning is almost laughable).

Skye: “You should be nicer to me. After all, I think I’m owed some ooohs and aaahs from my favorite mortal right about now; those were some impressive feats of strength out there. Some people might even consider me a hero.”
He lapsed into silence, staring at her expectantly.
Talia: “Fine. ….. oooh ….. aaah.”
Thank goodness for the banter to keep things light until the final third of the book where the action, magic, and mayhem finally kick in. The tone takes a delicious turn towards horror and intrigue. Unfortunately, as soon as the stage is set, the story ends. This was great enough that I would pay full credit for the remaining books … if they existed … which they don’t… argh! I have this awful, terrible, very bad feeling that I’ll have to make up my own ending because the series won’t conclude.
Ms. Fisher, please, please, please prove me wrong.
