Publisher's summary

A young heroine learns that, when you hide in the shadows, something darker may be waiting there for you . . . as the fantasy adventure saga continues.

Having discovered her true heritage, young Gatina is embracing her evolving role as an apprentice shadowthief. It turns out procuring things that don’t actually belong to you can be rather exciting. But the first thing a good thief must learn is how to not get caught. If the evil usurper Count Vichetral snares Gatina or her beloved family, a truly unpleasant fate awaits.

So her defiant father has deposited Gatina and her brother in the last place Vichetral’s men would think to look for them: stately Palomar Abbey. Under the alias of Maid Avorrita of Dentran—a purposely dull, bucktoothed maiden studying to be a novitiate—Gatina quickly comes to enjoy her new life among the elite. And then the trouble truly begins . . .

When Gatina’s father takes her along with him to Inmar to meet a fence who can handle their stolen goods, they discover a new threat to their Shadow Council: the checkered-cloaked Royal Censorate of Magic, dedicated to the ruthless enforcement of centuries-old laws pertaining to the use of magic. Later, Gatina’s dormant rajira unexpectedly emerges at the abbey, and she’s secretly tutored in shadowmagic by the mysterious Lady Silva.

What Gatina doesn’t realize is that very soon she’ll need every trick in her secret book. For a sinister new threat has arisen, one that will doom any who oppose its growing power. While Minalan the Spellmonger toils in distant lands to save humanity, Gatina must prove her skills in steel, sorcery, and the stars in order to save herself, her family, even freedom itself, by pulling off the ultimate SHADOWHEIST!

The Spellmonger: Legacy and Secrets trilogy introduces a younger Gatina, Kitten of the Night, as she comes into her own as a shadowmage.

Great addition, with disappointing performance

Love hearing more about Gatina. This is a great branch off on the series, BUT it appears that Terry and the narrator, Fiona, did not take into account the many reviews from the first book on her performance. She still mispronounces words, and it is distracting from other things going on. Which is really disappointing, because I really like her style of narration, and she does great.... if she'd just do her homework and respect the previously released materials when she takes on a role in such an epic tale.

warning - this book is written for teens

As much as I love the rest of Terry Mancour's work, this one is an aberration. The spunky pubescent heroine bit felt very predictable.

I love Terry Mancour but . . .

Just so you know, there have been times I've wanted to write down some of the brilliant turns of phrase T.M. has used in his books. He is in my top five writers, easy. If this were the FIRST book I'd read of his, I'd label him a boring hack and refuse to believe he'd ever write anything of worth.

I'm in chapter 13 of 32. It is rare that I start skipping and fast-forwarding through a book. It's like listening to a text book. I'm halfway through the book. No spoilers. Gatina goes to a monastery. That's it. No, Seriously. Nothing happens other than her Dad visits a fence. I haven't felt this way about a Terry Mancour book since Court Mage. We learn all about the history of the Palomar Abbey and are given no reason to care. I don't care.

The name of the book is "Shadowheist." Kinda sounds exciting, doesn't it? Especially with a character that I really like from the series. So, if you buy this one, you can SAFELY skip to chapter 14. You will miss nothing so far, other than who the girls are at the Abby, tomato picking, and descriptions of the political landscape. It may even make the rest of the book interesting trying to catch up on clues. I know he's going to rehash what's happened so far, as he's already done it several times.

So many times I thought something was going to happen. It didn't. Who knows? Maybe this will be the most exciting book in the collection? My fear is that it will be as uninteresting as the first 13 chapters.

I'm going to go do something more exciting, like watch a faucet drip. Oh, wait! Marshal Arcane dropped, today! Maybe I can still return this for the credit.

Not up to Minilan Standard

Please use a Narrator that understands effort and emphasis next time. Was any of this written by Terry?

Great side story for the SpellMonger Series

This is a very entertaining continuation of a side arc for a very enjoyable character, the kitten of the night.

The only real complaint that I have is that the voice talent is driving me crazy with the way she pronounces Magocracy. It should be pronounced like “magic” and not “Magog”. It’s extremely off-putting and I hope someone can get her to correct it.

Good story. Sub par narration.

Feedback: Emily Burch Harris should have listened to a Spellmonger or two before performing this book. She pronounces many place and people names of Calidor quote differently than the other story narrations. Very distracting…

not that good 💩💩💩💩💩

If you see this review by chance don't trust the five star reviews at least half of them are fake

My personal opinion I listen to the first two books in this side series they're one step above garbage

The spellmonger series great love that series but this one really tarnishes it I could not recommend this book to anyone it is well made but the overall story is crap

The main character kitten drags the entire story down I understand she doesn't have a very big present in the spellmonger series but this book series in my opinion makes her look bad and makes her family look barely competent

I was extremely disappointed in this series I held out hope though to book two I will not be buying book 3 I will be removing these two bucks for my phone

And I would recommend anyone who buys this book to listen to it immediately because if you don't like it if

you're fast enough you can get your money back sadly too late for me real shame about this entire book I tried really hard to like it and it would be good if they

used anyone else in that family as the main character the father the mother maybe the brother but literally almost anyone else

Good book

The audio book had a good reader and the story was solid. It was nice to have some of the characters from the original series stories flushed out.

Great story, but dragged at first + some poor pronunciations!

I really wish narrators would consult with the author and/or main narrator for these offshoots...its incredbly distracting for most pf the book when she says "pha-lahs" instead of "pha-liss" like we are used to. There were a few others also. I tired rating this as a 3 after the first chapter, planning on quitting the book and returning it, but audible wouldn't let me until I listened more. I ended up finishing it and overall glad I did.

Overall, the start really dragged for too long, and the narration of some words grated on me. But the story in the end was great. sadly many listeners may opt to return this book if they don't plough thru for the forst 5-10 chapters that drag on. just my 2 sense.
