Each year the magicians of Imardin gather together to purge the city streets of vagrants, urchins and miscreants. Masters of the disciplines of magic, they know that no one can oppose them. But their protective shield is not as impenetrable as they believe.

Sonea, angry, frustrated and outraged by the treatment of her family and friends, hurls a stone at the shield, putting all her rage behind it. To the amazement of all who bear witness, the stone passes unhindered through the barrier and renders a magician unconscious.

The guild's worst fear has been realised...There is an untrained magician loose on the streets. She must be found before her uncontrolled powers unleash forces that will destroy both her, and the city that is her home.

Disappointing

I was disappointed by this book. It was slow moving and frustrating, I just wanted to slap the heroine. I struggled to finish the book.

Excellent!

I really enjoy fantasy books and this series (of which this story is the first of three) is my favorate. This story is good, the second (The Apprentice) is better and the last (The High Lord) is fantastic!

I really enjoyed the reading of the book in this audio and can't wait for the rest of the series to be released.

The trillogy is the best I have read for a while!

This is a great book, though a little slow in setting the scene, it picks up pace. By the time you have read the second book, you cant stop at the end, so have the third one to hand!! Just a great story. I am looking forward to reading more from Ms Canavan.

I loved the book anyway

I've actually read the book before and this is just as good, the only thong is I read some of the names differently in my head than the narrator did but that's just me :)

Check who the narrator is first.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I should have checked who the narrator was first before purchasing. I prefer the Richard Aspel version.

Any additional comments?

Nice start to the trilogy. not too short or too long.

Plot was too predictably

The story line had so much more potential to develop characters and I lost interest in their plight as I couldn't form an emotional connection. I found myself thinking of so many sub plots and back stories that could add depth and meaning. Hopefully second will be better. Oh and I found the narrator annoying as most characters sound like girls. This combined with the lacking depth made it a slog to listen.

Good listen

Where does The Magicians' Guild rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This was one of the better books I've listened to. I found the narrators voice easy on the ears (whilst ill) and pleasurable to listen to. I got all 3 of the series and have now begun the sequel series.

What did you like best about this story?

The fantasy world has been well created and the characters are all believable.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

There weren't any stand out scenes for me personally.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

There were lots of highs and lows in this book, the series is an emotional roller coaster.

Any additional comments?

Thoroughly enjoyed listening to this book. I have read it before and was a little disappointed that the abridged version misses so much out but if you havent read it previously, you won't even notice.

Loved this book

I absolutely loved this book. From the second I began listening I was drawn into a world that had interesting characters, complex but not daunting story lines and a fantastic plot. I really loved all the characters in the book, it moved at a great pace and kept me interested all the way through. One of those books you are just sad to come to the end off.

excellent

This is the first of this series that I have listened to, and part of the reason I chose it was the excellent narrative by Samantha Bond. The only reason I havent given it 5 stars is because I prefer unabridged fiction but for the price this is super value and a great introduction if you are at all unsure about the genre. I have already put the second one onto my wish-list.

Bit of a slow starter... But stick with it!

The beginning of this book is a bit boring, and the storyline doesn't move on very fast (hence why I've only given 3 stars). However, as the book progresses it gets a lot better. It turns into a very interesting and different kind of story. I am now on book 2 which is much better than book 1, so stay with it. It will be worth while in the end!
