Publisher's Summary

The dream chooses the dreamer, not the other way around - and Lazlo Strange, war orphan and junior librarian, has always feared that his dream chose poorly. Since he was five years old he's been obsessed with the mythic lost city of Weep, but it would take someone bolder than he to cross half the world in search of it.

Then a stunning opportunity presents itself in the person of a hero called the Godslayer and a band of legendary warriors, and he has to seize his chance or lose his dream forever. What happened in Weep 200 years ago to cut it off from the rest of the world? What exactly did the Godslayer slay that went by the name of god? And what is the mysterious problem he now seeks help in solving? The answers await in Weep, but so do more mysteries - including the blue-skinned goddess who appears in Lazlo's dreams. How did he dream her before he knew she existed? And if all the gods are dead, why does she seem so real?

In this sweeping and breathtaking new novel by National Book Award finalist Laini Taylor, author of the New York Times best-selling Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, the shadow of the past is as real as the ghosts who haunt the citadel of murdered gods. Fall into a mythical world of dread and wonder, moths and nightmares, love and carnage.

Poetry, Dream & Heart

If you could sum up Strange the Dreamer in three words, what would they be?

A poignant, haunting and beautiful tale

What did you like best about this story?

It's message and theme, the way that there is no evil, only good intention turned sour.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Strange the story

Fantastic storyline, as ever with Laini Taylor's amazing ideas, narrated superbly by Steve West. This proved to be one of the best audible books I have so far enjoyed. Thank you! The anticipation of the sequel is almost too much to bear!

The most beautiful story

I loved the imagination used in this tale it was breathtaking and stunning I have been waiting for the second book for months and have listened to this twice now as I just adore it. I have a large collection of audible books and if you like magic and make believe this for you and the icing on the cake is the narrator- well done

charmingly creative story

interesting and innovative story, maybe drags a bit over the romance, but I think the author has one of the most distinctively creative minds I have come across in a long time. some genuinely beautiful writing.

Rich storytelling

Love this book and the way Laini Taylor creates her own, very unique, myths, monsters and gods.
Personally I'm not that enthralled by how much romance/passion there is in there (I think a bit enhances it) but it doesn't put me off enjoying the story.

OMG - please hurry up with book 2

Where does Strange the Dreamer rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is one of the best books I can ever remember.

What did you like best about this story?

Modern dilemmas in a total mythical situation. It shows the good intentions off all the characters, even the bad ones.

Have you listened to any of Steve West’s other performances? How does this one compare?

The best kind of narration; you forget about the narrator and are just there.

Did you have an emotional reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me laugh, cry and scream at the characters in frustration.

Any additional comments?

I actually shouted out "No" at the cliffhanger.

Beautiful and dreamlike

Latino Taylor's writing has always had a dreamlike quality to it, the way she paints worlds in your mind and pulls you into a story full of wonder and fantasy. This book is no exception. The narration added and extra layer of whimsy and feeling that really brought the characters to life. I cannot wait for the sequal

A good start

The story has begun. However, for me it could have been more concise, less meandering in direction.

Amazing story... good narrator

What made the experience of listening to Strange the Dreamer the most enjoyable?

The story itself. Laini Taylor tells a story like no one I've read (some caliber as Brandon Sanderson) and she has earned a place among my most favorite authors of all time. The narrator also added a particular je ne sais quoi that was difficult to get used to at first (I think mostly because of the accent) but became endearing to me by the end.

What did you like best about this story?

The plot and characters - I feel like I know them and that Weep is just reachable beyond the horizon.

What about Steve West’s performance did you like?

He was really good at keeping tempo with what he was reading. It almost felt as if he lived and breathed what was happening, and I think I'll have a hard time going on to listening to someone else now that I am used to the way he speaks.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The ending - it brought tears to my eyes.
