Publisher's Summary

Meet the galaxy's unluckiest outlaws.

Carl Ramsey is an ex-Earth Navy fighter pilot turned con man. His ship, the Mobius, is home to a ragtag crew of misfits and refugees looking to score a big payday but more often just scratching to pay for fuel. The crew consists of his ex-wife (and pilot), a drunkard, four-handed mechanic, a xeno-predator with the disposition of a 120kg housecat, and the galaxy's most-wanted wizard.

Along the way, the Mobius crew crosses paths with the Black Ocean's vilest scum, from pirate fleets to criminal syndicates, and most law-abiding scum, including Earth Interstellar Enhanced Investigative Organization, ARGO high command, and the Convocation of Wizards.

Time and again, riches lie just out of reach, because for all the talents Carl Ramsey and his crew possess, they've also got an outlaw's greatest weakness: a conscience.

Galaxy Outlaws is a collection of all 16 Black Ocean missions chronicling the adventures of the starship Mobius and her crew, along with six short stories. This series is the perfect cure for the Firefly Season 2 blues. It's what you'd get if The Orville took place on Serenity, or if Star Wars had wizards instead of Jedi.

Firefly cranked up on Meth plus a Space Wizard!

Wowza. This is one huge book collection. 87 hours is three and a half days. That is like starting on Monday and finishing on Thursday with no breaks. That alone makes it worth the singular credit that you spend on this massive tome of excellence. Oh, did I say excellence? Yes, indeed I did.

Let me Start off with talking about Naramore's narration. I've gotten to know him pretty well from the Sensation series by Kevin Hardman. I have long respected his work, and to be frank he is the reason that I found this book. I was looking through other books he had narrated, and found this baby. I was interested when I saw it was a complete collection, then I read the description and thought, "Holy Crap, this is right up my alley!" Then I saw how frikkin long it was was and realize what a steal I'd be getting. I said, hmmm cool story, Naramore, and days worth of listening. So I couldn't pass this up. Naturally, Naramore lives up to my expectations. He brings each character to life from the wiseacre captain to the drunk mechanic. You will really get to know them by the end of this book. When they are gone you will wonder where your friends have gone, because you will have logged some serious time. Enough time that you will feel like an honorary member of the crew.

Now as for the story, Morin brings this to life to a point that you will feel like the crew and their exploits really happen in a galaxy far far away. Of course you'll feel that way when you see they have a space wizard. That not withstanding this has more of a Firefly feel to it than anything else, since they are smugglers but in the same breath I could call this the extended crew of the Millenium Falcon sans Han and Chewy. Every character is interesting, and has a great back story that comes out during the series.

I will say that the writing is great, and there is action aplenty, and many a close call for the crew to narrowly avoid (sometimes not so unscathed). The plots are fast paced, and riveting in that they will really hold your attention. My problem was I had to keep shutting down, and not wanting to do so. It was hard to find a break or lull that I could happily quit for the night and not wonder what was going to happen next.

This is a wonderful series, and it is well worth the single credit it takes to buy it. I can't stress how fun and exciting the series actually was for me. If you like sci-fi or have the smuggler's blues then this is the series for you. This is for fans of Firefly, Star Wars, Star Trek, and even BattleStar Galactica. You will not go wrong with this series. Don't miss out!!! Even though I did receive a promo code for this review it in no way influenced my considerations of the material, and in fact, inspired me to be more honest. In fact, getting a code generally makes me harsher as a reviewer as I am more often concerned what someone like Me will decide based on my review.

Great Story

These books are fantastic. hope you buy this big pack before any others. Unlike me. Kinda screwed on that one. But supporting the artist is the best thing I suppose. I really hate how this compilation is organized. Its broken down into 8 packets to download, and they are all in the middle of books. Its really jacked up. wish they had made it one giant packet.

Firefly but better

I really enjoyed this series. During the 50+ hours of these stories I kept thinking this is just is as good if not better than the Firefly series. At the end, the author even states that these books came about due to the abrupt end of that fantastic tv show. Even with some minor editing issues, I still give this 5 stars. The worst part of this book is that its over for me and now I have to find something new...

Okay story

Any additional comments?

So far I've gone through 20 hours of this audiobook. I hate to disagree with other reviewers, but, this is not "like" Firefly. The ONLY thing it has in common with Firefly is: it's one ship with a bunch of misfit crew stuck together. That's IT. The story is okay, and I always enjoy listening to Mikael Naramore. If you can get past the one sanctimonious religiosity bulls*** character it's... okay.

Too much like Guardians of the Galaxy to enjoy

This is very basic writing. It's completely predictable and a very shallow plot line. I can't give it one star because it's not "bad". It's just not very good. If it had some kind of subplot or an overall looming story it might be better but the story totally lacks intrigue.

85+ Hours Of Grand Galactic Outlaw Hijinks!

And YOU think that you've got problems? --- Try having your three time ex-wife and former Marine as your ship's pilot, an oversized cat who's always looking for a fight as your security officer, a four handed alcoholic as your engineering officer trying to keep your patched together ship running, a naivete former priestess out to reform you and your crew of their evil ways, and the galaxies most notorious and wanted WIZARD as your not always so loyal crew who really don't take your position as Ship's Captain all that seriously. All as you just try to FINALLY latch onto that Big Payday while avoiding not only The Authorities, but the nefarious Major Corporations, Alien Empires, Crime Syndicates, Space Pirates, Wizard Assassins, and your own conman parents! = A Whole LOT of fun filled action packed adventures with a host of interesting characters in a very well imagined universe.
JS Morin has created one GREAT series, and Mikael Naramore does an EXCELLENT job of bringing it all to audible life!!!

DO NOT PASS THIS ONE UP!!!!

An Engaging Simple Read

What made the experience of listening to Galaxy Outlaws: The Complete Black Ocean Mobius Missions, 1-16.5 the most enjoyable?

I found this series to be a very enjoying, simple read. It has a nice scope of concept that I found very easy to engage with and very easy to listen to while I went about my usual responsibilities in life. That is something I really value in an audio book. While not as epic in scope as some other works out there for anyone who enjoyed Farscape or Serenity you will enjoy this omnibus. I have recommended this to my brothers and father.

What did you like best about this story?

What I enjoyed most was Mort! The magic system is pretty cool and his character development is great. He's kind of a barbarian Technomagus.

Have you listened to any of Mikael Naramore’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not listened to his other works.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

"Dark Magic, Dark Science and The Deep Astral..."

I was hooked from the begining to the end.

The narrator and author delivers here a fun, irresponsible and sometimes rude adventure that could werry well have been a good tv show.

85 hours well spent. If you loved Firefly/Serenity, you seriously need to listen to this!

What I at first thought would be fan fiction, was blown out of the water by this gigantic trip down a wormhole to a new and exciting world of serialised space opera of an epic scale, coupled with cosy story-telling. Masterful prose, engaging characters coupled with an outstanding narrator fully emersed in the story has left me wanting more... as all good series should!

Nice try

First, get rid off all the sound effects its just not needed. The stories are not bad and some are somewhat entertaining, but I felt there was little imagination when it came to alien species. I wasn't apposed to a mix of magic and science, but I do wish the magic had a Law System.

WOW!

This series has been my listening life for nearly 2 weeks and now it's over... I'm not sure what I'm going to with myself! It definitely fills the gaping hole left by firefly but also leaves you wanting more.

Great story, loved it

This was brilliant. Really love it. The British accents need a bit of work in my opinion but wasn't even close to enough to spoil my enjoyment. Absolutely fantastic.

Wow epic!

This is a true marathon of listening. This series is funny, sad, exciting and downright addictive. I really feel like I have lost a part of me now finished. If you are reading this and wondering "bloody hell this is a long diatribe" give it a go you won't be sorry. The narrator is excellent he gives a true sounding sole to each character. To the writer I can't wait for more stories from the Black ocean.

A worthy successor to Firefly

When a book series bills itself as 'like Firefly but with wizards', it's easy to be cynical. Nothing will ever be as great as Firefly. You are setting yourself up for failure.

Now I am going around telling people they HAVE to listen to this series. And the only way I can describe it is that it is like Firefly. With wizards.

It's also incredible value. It's 85 hours of Firefly-style entertainment for one credit. It kept me sane during seven weeks when my train was replaced with a bus service.

Naturally, not every single minute of the series is perfect. The first two thirds is brilliant. Then it occasionally slips into soap opera rather than space western mode. There are enough flashes of the previous brilliance in the last third to make it worth persevering.

My absolute favourite character is Mort, the crotchety murderous wizard. He has the ability to draw people, voluntarily or otherwise, into his head where there is an entire other world known as Mortania. Each night he sleeps, a year passes in Mortania.

In short: buy this book and listen to it. It's absolutely wonderful.

Outright fun.

I have had an absolute ball with this series.
It's obvious the narrator did too.
