Publisher's Summary

When the body of a fast-living young stockbroker is found in a shallow grave, suspicion first falls on a cuckolded policeman. Lieutenant Joe Gunther investigates the increasingly bizarre details of the crime, but he's too far behind events to prevent a second murder. Indeed, whoever is responsible always seems to be a few steps ahead, as if there's a leak in the police force. Sweltering August heat does nothing to calm the increasingly agitated town selectmen, who demand results.

Almost earns 5 stars!

Scent of Evil is Book 3 in the 28 novel Joe Gunther police procedural mystery series by Archer Mayor. Of the five series novels I have listened to it is easily the best due mostly to the way suspense is built. Tom Taylorson does an excellent job of narration.

Too much foul language

There is entirely to much foul language within the story line. I found it to be very uncomfortable to listen to the narrative.

Better than Bosch

I love Bosch but if i had met Joe first Bosch wouldn’t have had a chance. Proof that an “imperfect” character doesn’t have to be hated to be hung ho. And the twists never stop coming. Tom Taylorson is quickly becoming a favorite narrator as well. Finally a series worthy of re-listens.

Impressive and amazing murder mystery

Being a fan of this detective series as well as both author and narrator, I was looking forward to my second book. I was not disappointed. A suspenseful detective thriller, “Scent of Evil” held my attention as I anxiously listened. Never a dull moment with a rather quick ending. Narrator Tom Taylorson blends his quality pitch-perfect tone to bring his characters to life. Highly recommended.

Love These Books & They're FREE!!

I just found these books probably 2 weeks ago. I'm moving on to book 4. I'm hooked. I haven't even used my credit yet because this series has kept me thoroughly entertained. The performance is fantastic and the stories are a mix of mystery, thriller, with some humor and great detective work. I saw a few bad reviews before deciding to give them a try and obviously this just isn't the genre for those people. This is everything I look for in murder mystery books with awesome narration, and did I mention that almost all of these books are included with Prime membership?! There are a ton of books in this series!

OK plot, awkward writing

The plot is good. Brattleboro setting is refreshingly different. Nice sense of place. The characters are likeable -- and it's a relief to read a police novel where the mayor or the police chief or the detective's best friend is NOT the murderer.

But for me the writing was like fingernails across a blackboard. Too many usage mistakes and wrong-word errors. If this sort of thing doesn't bother you, good novel. If this sort of thing does bother you, beware.

Joe is the Man!

I'm enjoying the Joe Gunther series. The narrator portrays Gunther perfectly. I'm a New Englander, so I can appreciate all the description and landmarks.
The stories are quite detailed. If you don't like reads with alot of details. Then this series may not be for you...

Absolutely wonderful book and narration, but that ending cannot can not be correct ? No epilogue, ending abruptly? is it only 39 chapters?

Easy listen

This is just a nice series! Not taxing. Well drawn characters but I feel I listen because of the narration which makes it an easy listen.

Could not get into it

I blame the narator's voice for this story not gripping me; I quit a few hours in
