Publisher's Summary

“A poignant, necessary entry into the children’s literary canon, Root Magic brings to life the history and culture of Gullah people while highlighting the timeless plight of Black Americans. Add in a fun, magical adventure and you get everything I want in a book!” (Justina Ireland, New York Times best-selling author of Dread Nation)

Debut author Eden Royce arrives with a wondrous story of love, bravery, friendship, and family, filled to the brim with magic great and small.

It’s 1963, and things are changing for Jezebel Turner. Her beloved grandmother has just passed away. The local police deputy won’t stop harassing her family. With school integration arriving in South Carolina, Jez and her twin brother, Jay, are about to begin the school year with a bunch of new kids. But the biggest change comes when Jez and Jay turn 11 - and their uncle, Doc, tells them he’s going to train them in rootwork.

Jez and Jay have always been fascinated by the African American folk magic that has been the legacy of their family for generations - especially the curious potions and powders Doc and Gran would make for the people on their island. But Jez soon finds out that her family’s true power goes far beyond small charms and elixirs…and not a moment too soon. Because when evil both natural and supernatural comes to show itself in town, it’s going to take every bit of the magic she has inside her to see her through.

Amazing!!!

I purchased this book for my young reader! This what she had to say: "This was an amazing book! I loved Isabell, Susie and Dinah! There was NEVER a dull moment. I think you will like to!" I would like to thank the author for such a great story with relatable characters. My baby can't stop talking about it. Thank you!

My Child and I listened to this Book... and let’s just say she took a break to finish up
Some homework and I JUST COULD NOT WAIT... if I had to give it a rating of 1-10, I’d give it 100!!! Blessings to everyone that assisted in creating this MASTERPIECE... especially the Author... it felt as if we were literally there... such grand imagery

Eden Royce understood the assignment

Great book. It was more than fiction. It was history. It was heritage. It was legacy. It was ancestral knowledge and wisdom. It was validation of African Ancestral Religions and Spiritual Practices. It was everything. I will eventually re-read it.

Eden Royce, if you see this. This was validation and confirmation from my people at many points.

Imani Parks, thank you for this amazing performance

Highly recommend for AA people new on their spiritual journey or who may be embarrassed by it. So validating

Great story! Kids enjoyed! Narrator’s habit of exclaiming most of the delivery was distracting!

The story was great, always good to give the kids an idea of the struggles of others, even so recently (& on-going). It is always good to have a culturally appropriate narrator; however, most of her exposition were exclamations! It sounded like she was trying to be dramatic! You had to listen carefully to determine which parts really needed emphasis! It became off-putting! Marred an otherwise great tale!

Excellent!!

This was a beautiful experience. I was captivated throughout the entire story, and the real and accurate references to root work made the story relatable…an excellent read!
