Publisher's Summary

A scorching forbidden love threatens to tear a rift through the Black Dagger Brotherhood in J. R. Ward's newest novel in the New York Times best-selling series.

Xcor, leader of the Band of Bastards, convicted of treason against the Blind King, is facing a brutal interrogation and torturous death at the hands of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. Yet after a life marked by cruelty and evil deeds, he accepts his soldier's fate, his sole regret the loss of a sacred female who was never his: the Chosen Layla.

Layla alone knows the truth that will save Xcor's life. But revealing his sacrifice and his hidden heritage will expose them both and destroy everything Layla holds dear - even her role of mother to her precious young. Torn between love and loyalty, she must summon the courage to stand up against the only family she has for the only man she will ever love. Yet even if Xcor is somehow granted a reprieve, he and Layla would have to confront a graver challenge: bridging the chasm that divides their worlds without paving the way for a future of even greater war, desolation, and death.

As a dangerous old enemy returns to Caldwell and the identity of a new deity is revealed, nothing is certain or safe in the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, not even true love or destinies that have long seemed set in stone.

    "Fantastic!"

Wow loved it! A whole lot going on but I think that's one of the things I liked about it. In a lot of series once the main characters of a book get their story the are usually either in the background or never heard from again. What the Warden seems to do in the BDB series is so much better more like real life just because someone gets their HEA your life isn't always a bed of roses. This world she has created is truly a family and with families they have their ups and downs. And things aren't always settled in 1 book. And it is always interesting! Still waiting for Murder to show back up. Just saying! 😻 Can't wait till next year for The Thief! I'll just tied myself over with Blood Fury coming in January. Can't recommend J.R.Ward enough!

"OMG - I can't be at the end of the series???"
Would you listen to The Chosen again? Why?

Yes. I'm considering starting back at 'Dark Lover' just for kicks.

What other book might you compare The Chosen to and why?

None - all good; all unique.

What does Jim Frangione bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Jim is great. Deep voiced; and classy. I couldn't listen to BDB without him.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Both. The Layla Xcor love affair was a long time coming. It'll make you laugh, cry, and want to kill Qhuinn.

    Any additional comments?

So... I've read books before - but I've never been much of a "reader" (or listener - since this is Audible). The Black Dagger Brotherhood series is the ONLY series I've made it through. First to last; front to back. And honestly - I don't want it to be over. I've bought all 15 (or however many) of these over the past year, and I can honestly say I look FORWARD to traffic... or parking far away from my office... or waiting in the lobby for appointments. You get emotionally invested in these characters; and you feel intertwined in their lives. How's Lassiter going to do with his new job? The bastards AND the brothers - together? Holy moly - what the heck is Throe planning with his new little "friend"? So, it's not over. Warden's got more stories in her; I'm sure of it. And I really liked this one. Might even start BloodVow while I wait :)

    "Awesome story!! "

I'll be honest the same sex relationship portion of the story threw me for a loop in the beginning. But once I got past it. I couldn't put it down... Well done.

I have read each installment of this series and continue to enjoy them immensely. The performance was top notch which makes the characters very realistic. The storyline is one that I have been anticipating and was not disappointed. Very well done.

"Love this series even if it makes me cry!"
Where does The Chosen rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've enjoyed everyone of the books in this series and what has made it even more special is the fantastic narration by Jim Frangione! I stopped reading the books just so I could listen to his voice and the two will always be intertwined in my mind now.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Chosen?

Quinn shooting up the nursery! I really couldn't understand his over the top reaction!

    Which scene was your favorite?

I was crying during what I thought was Layla and Xcor's farewell scene, hoping against hope for a happy ending. I love HEA's !

"Just when I thought it couldn't get any better!"

I loved this story! It takes an amazing author to take a character who was a villain in an earlier book in the series and have you praying that he gets his HEA with his love!
