Editorial reviews

In the theology of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, The Book of Mormon is the word of God which recounts "the history and God’s dealings with the people who lived in the Americas between approximately 600 BC and 400 AD". The origins of this holy book are fascinating: An angel supposedly told Joseph Smith, in 1827, where to find the buried golden plates that contained the ancient scripture.

On his website, Sean Crisden justly boasts that he has "the voice of reason". In this performance of The Book of Mormon, complete with helpful chapter numbers and verse notations, Crisden's voice is almost as smooth and authoritative as a true prophet's.

Publisher's summary

Here is an audio edition of the sacred text of the Latter-Day Saint movement that followers believe contains the writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 B.C. to A.D. 421. A fascinating listen for religious scholars and denominational adherents alike.

Very poor production

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Well except for all the time I spent listening to the author repeating the numbers of the chapter and verse.

What didn’t you like about Sean Criden’s performance?

Very flat. It would be a fantastic audio book if it had been done like a performance. But it sounded like a librarian reading a dictionary.

Do you think The Book of Mormon needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I'd like to read the 2/3rds of the Golden Plates that were sealed, yes

Any additional comments?

I really hope you redo this. I would be enthralled if this was done without the verses and with a passionate perfomer narrating it. This was a disappointment.

Please Redue without the chapter and verse numbers

I love the Book of Mormon and feel very strongly about the teachings that a person can learn from its messages. BUT PLEASE RE-RECORD IT WITHOUT THE CHAPTERS AND VERSES!!!! Its a real pain even the shortest of verses are presided by the Narrator saying First Nephi Chapter One Verse One, I Nephi...etc then Frist Nephi Chapter One Verse Two... etc etc. I would be like any other book stoping and reading the page number at the bottom of each page. It drives me nuts. Its like you just brought up a copy of the book of mormon up on a word document and hit the microsoft say it program. He reads very well and you in the longer verses you can tell he's a good reader but the constant breaks take out any ability to get into the book. There is no person that is reading any scripture that stops at each verse requotes the chapter and verse. I wouldn't mind just reading the chapters but it to big an annoyance and the only real problem I have with the book at all.

couldn't be worse...

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The scriptural reference is given for every chapter and every verse, with every verse. It's impossible to listen to and get anything from. What where they thinking? It's a total waste of a credit.

I'd love to have the book to listen to, but not with the references.

How could the performance have been better?

Delete the references with every verse!!!

Chapter and verse before every verse

If you could sum up The Book of Mormon in three words, what would they be?

Best book ever

Who was your favorite character and why?

Nephi, he had great faith.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sean Criden?

Thomas S. Monson

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes

Any additional comments?

It is frustrating listening to the chapter and verse before each verse it is more frustrating hearing the verse repeated twice before each verse. It distracts from the narrative. Furthermore, some of the pronunciation of the characters is off. I also don't like that the audio book says it is written by Joseph Smith when it is actually translated by Joseph Smith.

Great book, tedious performance!

Would you listen to The Book of Mormon again? Why?

I would listen to it and have listened to it, in another format. I loved the book read by a different narrator. However, this narrator, Sean Criden, did a real amateurs job of it. The book is divided, like the bible, into chapters and verses. Sean Criden begins each verse with, "The book of_____, chapter___, verse____", then reads the few sentences in the verse. He then starts the next verse with the same, "The book of _______, chapter________, verse______." Considering there are many many verses in each chapter, this format makes virtually impossible to get imersed in the plot and content of the book.

What did you like best about this story?

The best thing about this story, is the story itself. It's the history of an ancient people who believed in Jesus Christ, in the Americas. It's powerful and a beautiful book. I love how it's messages have changed my own life. However, you'd have a real hard time experiencing that from this audio version.

What didn’t you like about Sean Criden’s performance?

If he didn't begin each little verse in the book with a long reference to the book name, chapter and verse number, you mean? Well, he would still be hard to listen to. He reminds me of my middle school math teacher... monotone. Again, get a free copy of this book from the church, buy a hard copy anywhere else or download the better narrator from mormon dot org, instead.

Feedback on this version of the Book of Mormon

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

LEAVE OUT THE VERSE NUMBERS. Then I would be able to follow what is being said as in story form as opposed to now... after every verse it says the chapter and the verse AGAIN. That is aweful plus it makes the overall listening time much longer. Frankly this version is so disappointing I will probably not actually use it.

What did you like best about this story?

Could only stand to listen to a few minutes

Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Criden’s performances?

Not really. I can't tell whether or not he is a good reader or a bad because of the irritating chapter and verse interuptions

What character would you cut from The Book of Mormon?

n/a

Repeating chapter and verse

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

NO

Would you be willing to try another one of Sean Criden’s performances?

No

Any additional comments?

The reader repeats chapter and verse for EVERY verse and it is extremely ANNOYING and unnecessary. Do NOT buy this book unless you want to pull your hair out.

It could have been half the length!

What disappointed you about The Book of Mormon?

All of the chapter and verse numbers were narrated along with the text. There are two significant problems with this, it could have been half the length and it was extremely distracting. Every other sentence was, "1 Nephi 8:10", etc. for about 30 hours. I understand that some people like to quote chapter and verse but is an audiobook the place for that? Personally, I think not.

What did you like best about this story?

The text is enriching and brought me to a closer understanding of my own faith. The narrator was very good too except that the producers made him read all of the chapter and verse numbers.

What does Sean Criden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I would never have read the book. So I guess Sean made that possible.

Any additional comments?

For the love of God, make a new recording without the chapter and verse numbers, please.

Wonderful to have scriptures in audio.

What made the experience of listening to The Book of Mormon the most enjoyable?

The Book of Mormon is very dear to my heart and I love the story very much. It is a comfort and lift in my life.

What did you like best about this story?

As it is scripture, I love the words of admonition and encouragement it give me.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

The biggest distraction was the way the verses are presented. I did not like that he repeated the chapter and verse number before each verse was read. It would have been less distracting and more enjoyable for him to simply read the chapter notes then to read continuously through the chapter.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There are too many moments to list even one specific one.

Not pleased with the narrative style

Would you consider the audio edition of The Book of Mormon to be better than the print version?

No

What did you like best about this story?

Content is interesting

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sean Criden?

Anyone who doesn't keep repeating the book, chapter and verse with every single verse.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

3 Nephi

Any additional comments?

Record this again without the book, chapter and verse with every single verse and then I might download it to my Kindle again. Until then I will just continue to read the book.
