About this listen

From the best-selling author of My Sister's Keeper comes the riveting story of a murder that shatters the picturesque calm of Amish country - and tests the heart and soul of the lawyer defending the woman at the center of the storm.

The discovery of a dead infant in an Amish barn shakes Lancaster County to its core. But the police investigation leads to a more shocking disclosure: Circumstantial evidence suggests that 18-year-old Katie Fisher, an unmarried Amish woman believed to be the newborn's mother, took the child's life. When Ellie Hathaway, a disillusioned big-city attorney, comes to Paradise, Pennsylvania, to defend Katie, two cultures collide - and for the first time in her high-profile career, Ellie faces a system of justice very different from her own. Delving deep inside the world of those who live "plain", Ellie must find a way to reach Katie on her terms. And as she unravels a tangled murder case, Ellie also looks deep within - to confront her own fears and desires when a man from her past reenters her life.

Plot twist!!!!!

Loved it for the most part. I couldn't get past the voice for the judge. I wanted to hear what she had to say ,I would cringe the entire time. 😬

Good story,needs better narrators

Why do all the narrators have to overact and act angry or Morose at inappropriate times. Jodi is a fabulous storyteller. They don’t do her work justice.

Once you get past Katie the book is alright.

Ughh Katie. I’ve read a lot of books with Amish characters specifically females. Yes they can be shy and naïve about their outside world yet they retain a strength of their own. Katie’s portrayal is in short annoying. I loved Ellie and all of the other characters involved in the story. The plot and story lions are superb. The narration was great. It’s just Katie. Everything about her personality her reasoning somehow bothered me. I kept rolling my eyes. Sadly this made my experience with the book less enjoyable

Plain Truthb

Amazing! Helped me understand plain people. I live among Mennonites but I needed to know about the Amish. Ms Picoult handled the subject very well.

Another hit by this author

Jodi Picoult is the only author that has never disappointed (me)!! I love how she always finds a relevant topic in our society and weaves a brilliant, thought-provoking story around it. I highly recommend this one, and many others I've read of hers!

The story of the Amish

Too much repetition in the dialogue. Telling the same scenario over and over again. I have nothing else to say.

Hoped for more

I have enjoyed reading Jodi Picoult in the past, but this book disappointed. Without being able to skim over the repetition by reading, it was tedious in sections. Then there was the legal drama part. Since I have been a trial attorney for more than 40 years, I couldn't help but be critical of the court room drama that was wrong. Then there was the sense of being deceived with the "surprise" ending that contradicted hours of listening and seemed just plain wrong.

Good but Not My Favorite

The plot of the story was good. The twist was right at the end, which is what I was waiting for. The book was really interesting and had a very nice character development. I really enjoyed learning more about a Ellie and seeing a character who encouraged a strong female character. One thing I hated about it was the character of Katie; all the did was complain and blame everyone else for her problems caused by lying. The narrator didn’t really help. Couple of times I had to stop listening to the book because whoever was narrating the voice of Katie was really annoying and unbearable to listen to.

Jenn's Review

I liked the story line, but I didn't really care for the narrator. The detectives voice was quite obnoxious.
