An excellent book on parenting.

There are several books on this topic and I'm not sure if this is the best, but it's the best one I've found so far. I am a social worker and part of my job is helping parents with their discipline methods. This book explains the topic clearly and the narration is excellent. The message is to change your own behavior to teach your child to behave. I completely agree with the author that the parent's emotional intelligence is extremely important. If you want to predict what kind of adult your child will be you only need to look inside yourself. He/She will most likely have all of your strengths and weaknesses. If you are prone to adult temper tantrums, then your child will copy you. If you are in control of your emotions and remain calm, your child will begin to copy that as well. It won't happen overnight mainly because the parent is going to mess it up and won't be able to maintain calm. The child will increase their testing behavior when the old methods stop working, but if the parent can truly change then the child will follow.

A good foundation

I think that this teaches the right way to think about parenting but needs to be combined with other books that teach skills more specifically. I think that the praising techniques from Kazdin (Yale parenting center) should be reviewed to improve one’s parenting techniques. “How to talk so little Kids will listen” should be read in conjunction with this.

Amazing!!!! You really need this book!

There are so many parenting books out there but this is truly one of the best. Dr. Markham has a captivating writing style that is easy to read/listen and even easier to understand. If you want to be happy as a parent and to have happy children, you should definitely consider reading this book (at least once!)

Eye opening

I really enjoyed this book. So many gems that forced me to connect and re-evaluate connections I made with my own childhood. This book is a great tool for any parent looking for a start on how to break the cycle of poor parenting choices that may negatively impact your child/children later. Start today to re-build or build a better relationship. Thank you.

Good advice, chapters don't match book layout

I will say it was OK. It definitely offers good techniques. The listening chapters do not match the book at all so it makes it very difficult to find particular points. I don't like that she says parents enjoy or get relief from beating or abusing their children. Those parents aren't reading this book. I can definitely relate my children's issues with the characteristics described in this book. I have started using the techniques and they are helping. Great book for the new parents or seasoned parents. I would read more books and not just stop here.

Gives great insights

Gives great insights with helpful examples of what empathetic, attuned parenting looks like. I would give it 5 stars, except the one part that spoke about daycare didn't sit well with me. In an ideal world, I wouldn't put my kids in daycare, not we don't live in that kind of world. That part made me feel like I failed my babies because I put them in daycare. Otherwise, a very good book for any parents needing guidance with discipline and setting boundaries without shaming or punishment.

The best guide line on how to help you and your kid to bond and overcome the situation

I have read some books and this one by far was the most helpful in building strong and healthy relationship.

Parent Life Saver

There are not enough words to explain or show my gratitude. This is a book I have read, listened to and then listened again. And I am pretty sure I will do it again and again as needed. Even my husband has listened to it! There are tools given that we practice using all the time as a parents. It truly makes our life easier and our sons and our family as a whole. I highly recommend this book to all parents.

Great info, pleasant narrator

Information and ideas presented are very important but not new. Similar to what you'd find in most positive parenting books based on Alderian concepts. Liked the narrator. She made it seem easy and simple.

A must

I wish I would’ve acquired this book before my firstborn was delivered. There are so many things we get wrong and way too many things that we pass as our own baggage. This book helped me identify my own hidden issues and misconceptions that were affecting the way I was “educating” my son. Highly recommend it.
