Publisher's Summary

Being a normal teenager is hard. For Chance Fortunato, former demon’s apprentice and reforming warlock, it’s almost impossible. On the outs with Shade, his alpha werewolf girlfriend, behind on his magickal studies and still hunted by the Conclave, Chance thinks his life can’t get any worse. But when an empath named Dani asks him to find her missing girlfriend, Chance’s life suddenly spirals out of his control.

Caught by the Conclave, he finds himself facing a Trial by Ordeal. To save himself and his new mentor Dr. Corwyn, Chance must find the stolen Maxilla Asini, a powerful sword that can change the balance of power between the magi and the forces of the Nine Hells. As he searches for the Maxilla and continues his search for the missing girl, he discovers a sinister link between Dani’s abducted girlfriend, the disappearances of other teens in New Essex, and the politics of the local vampire coven.

Caught between multiple forces, Chance soon discovers that his only hope may be the missing Maxilla. With the forces of both good and evil aligned against him, will a bad attitude, the help of his friends, and a little faith be enough to help Chance beat the biggest challenge of his life?

Fun Story

This is one of the stories where thr MC is not perfect. He knows he is a mess and fights to do the right thing. With the mix is humor and action, this is a lot of fun to read. So glad they decided to make the rest of the series available on Audible.

Great Book!

I am honestly amazed as to how much actual occult knowledge and how much pop culture occult knowledge Ben Reeder has. Truly, Bravo Sir. Bravo!

As for the book, thoroughly enjoyed it. Not only are there tie-ins with the first novel, which is something I loved, but the characters are more fleshed out. As one dimensional as the character names are, the actual characters are awesome. The interactions between them will pull your emotions all over the place. It drew me in.

To the potential reader or listener, get this book. If you at all enjoyed The Demon's Apprentice, you will enjoy this book.

Sincerely,

Virgil Allen Moore

This was not entertaining

Man, this one needed some more time on the oven. The MC is a teenager who was once a warlock (demon wizard) training to be a wizard who is entangled in a destiny quest to find the sword. I tried, like seriously tried to like this, but nothing really gelled together. It's a world with wizards, werewolves, demons, and teen drama. The author wanted to go for Harry Potter but Metal, and nothing worked. The Mc is courageous but a wimp, the magic and real world mix fails to pass the smell test, and the weird romance is distracting and annoying.

Enjoy Dresden Files?

THis is what I imagine Harry Dresden would have been like as a Warlock.
There is not as much chuckles, but I find it a pretty good substitute as I await Dresden.

Also, the kid seems a good deal smarter than normal. He preps the battlefield pretty well.

Creepy

The story, as a continuation of the first, is very good. My biggest problem I have with this is the sexual tension and relationship between 215-year-old kids. If this were a young adult series, I might understand it, but it’s not and having to 15-year-old kids make out in a car owned by a teacher of theirs is borderline child pornography. If the author only mentioned this once or twice, it would be OK, but in my opinion, mentioning that she’s been raped and she was turned when she was 13 and they are physical interaction over and over is too much. I am uncomfortable reading explicit sex scenes between adults, this, though not explicit, makes me very uncomfortable and I don’t understand how other rReaders are giving this book 5 stars. Not sure I’ll continue this series

Got better

I really enjoy a story about good vanquishing bureaucracy... and evil. Action packed and a wild ride from start to finish.

Very Good Book in a Very Good Series

A combination of an emotional back ground story, a urban fantasy mission against the preternatural, and a solid narrator. I look forward to the next book.

A great future for Ben Reeder's writing

Incredibly well written with a great plot. Dialogue is sometimes juvenile, but otherwise great

Fantastic fantasy full of heart

What a refreshing change. The antidote to JK Rowling and the famous five school of fantasy writing. The heroes have heart and arcs the villains are authentically evil. The book is very well researched and I was amused to find characters with the names as a nod towards such luminaries as Chomsky and Krishnamurti.

great second installment, but has it's flaws.

The second book picks up pretty much at the end of the first. great.
The story develops well, and so do the characters for the most part. I have come to accept the authors method of over description of the female form is probably for the elder teen age group more than adult audiences.
my only other issue with this is the ending seems crushed into twenty or so minutes. it was worthy of more.
the narrator still performs well throughout and I had got through this in a day.

KAZ🇬🇧😃 Umm 🤔!!

The thing I don't get is at the start of the book it say's there 15-16 yr's old but then there's this stuff about riding motorcycles & being in love that is just unbelievable for the age of the main character's Doesn't gel for me The storyline is ok narration is pretty good as well it's just I keep getting hung up on the age again & again so I'm reflecting that with my low score sadly What's with all the pent up sexual crap 💩 as well & Chance is alway's bloody CRYING 😭 I've never known a teenager boy blubbering so much grow a backbone you wimp 😳😳

A Satisfying Story

I believe that this story has a lot of potential. Certainly unique and it delves into magic using a different point of view. Recommended

Good read

Based in the world of fantasy, legends and fiction, it's skilled writing is brought to life. Leaving an impression to see the series to its conclusion.
