Editorial reviews

Bored and dissatisfied with her job at the public library, Kathleen is jolted out of her ennui when five overdue books are returned to the library, slashed and containing a warning to all library employees. Narrator Judith West uses her mature, slightly raspy voice to great effect, shifting her tone to match the gradual buildup of suspense as the people around Kathleen begin to die in suspicious accidents. While West is particularly adept at the older characters' voices, her Kathleen rings charmingly true with a teenager's resentfulness and occasional petulance.

Publisher's summary

Disturbed when five books about death are returned overdue to the library, slashed and containing a warning on a bookmark, library employee Kathleen is terrified when people close to her start falling victim to tragic "accidents".

Narrator

I enjoyed the story itself. The villain was definitely a shocker. I didn’t suspect that person up until close to the reveal.

The narrator made the story a bit annoying to hear. You can tell she’s older, so every character sounded way older than they should. There was also barely any difference between the male and female characters. I enjoy when Tara Sands is the narrator. She’s really good at making the characters distinct and sound their age.

Narrator

I couldn’t only listen to this book in small sections, id even skip over listening and forgot about it for a month or 2 and came back to listen and remembered why I didn’t care to finish it. The narration was so hard to listen to for me. Made everything drag on.

Eh! Just okay in every way.

Kathleen works at a library. She is closing up one night when mysterious things begin to happen. She gets strange phone calls, finds eerie clues, and her friends begin to experience danger.

The plot of this story sounded perfect. I was hoping for something a bit on the supernatural side, but sadly this is just a thriller. The effectiveness of a thriller hangs on "the big reveal", and I just did not buy the villain.

The book maintains suspense, and Ms. Tankersley Cusick is a good writer, but overall this book was not that scary or believable. I also did not care for the wedged-in romance.
