Publisher's Summary

We all have inner demons. We fight them all the time. Some of us achieve inner peace by coming to terms with them. But how do you come to terms with inner demons that tear free and become outer demons?

Eric has been a vampire for nearly a century, and his demons are more than metaphors. While they controlled him, he was the Demon King. Now he has to avoid the monsters in his own mind, as well as angry nobles, fanatical religions, assassins, magi, other vampires, criminal organizations, and the neighborhood gossip.

He wants two things: To find Tort, and to have someplace to call home.

It may be too much to ask.

main character turned into a self centered girl

series started off with regular geek fumbling his way into the world of vampires. ..did a good job with bad guys using wit and unexpected powers of the dark. By book three , he's an egomaniac that wants everybody to love him and fear him but his big decisions are what "outfits" to wear, and also wants us to know the minute details of his imaginary magic..just like his side kick...give us the cliff notes version...hope erik gets bounced back to school and we can see the interesting story of how the blond chick takes over the world

Enough "Niceguy™"

First: The good. I did listen to all three books so far, and apparently enjoyed them enough to continue listening. Also, the narrator really does a great job of keeping the story alive, i felt very engaged with the listening, even while being frustrated at the titular character. I think Bronze is a terrific horse idea, even though we gloss over how he killed several real horses to make her. Some of the action scenes are well done and

Complaints: First, it reads like a wish-fulfillment novel (i.e., the author just sorta mixes up a bag of things he wishes he could do and pulls out the base plot - ergo, i'm an immortal-vampire-wizard-deathgod-scientist who is still alive during the day, because why not sex?)

Second: He's an idiot. Eric, Halar, Vlad, whichever name he goes by, he makes me actively anxious in how unaware he is. In this third book, he escapes his "basement" and tries to make up for his lost time. This includes being a Niceguy™ up until someone disagrees with him, has a different outlook on life, or basically chooses any path but the one the Nightlord agrees with. Then, he decides he better make-up for his "evil-alter-egos" actions, and goes about righting some wrongs. But he never considers that maybe some women don't want to see their rapists face, or some children will never forgive the man they saw pour molten lead down their father's throats. Nope, if he just tries hard enough, everyone will forgive him, and let him go ahead doing whatever he wants, AS LONG as it isn't being king, because he really doesn't like kinging. He just wants to tell everyone what to do, and be left alone

And he's so bad at relationships, he can't handle all the sex that gets thrown at him, it confuses his already overtaxed relationship sense, and he has to go back to his pseudo-scientific experiments based in loose ideas and glued together with magic.

Ok, enough complaining, the story is good enough that i didn't quit half-way, so that's something!

Recycled plot from the first two books.

Would you try another book from Garon Whited and/or Sean Runnette?

No.

Has Orb turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

Any additional comments?

This is exactly the same plot as the other two. Same bone headed decisions by the main character. Same new romance. Same attempt to improve a world. It all goes wrong and Eric ends up dead/sleeping/lost/whothehellcares again.

Won't be fooled by this series again.

Good, but too much going on. ending ruined it.

I really like the character and the world, but there is simply too much going on. its not enough for the hero to have 1,2, or even 3 quest. he has to have so many that most major plots go unresolved, despite being the focus of the book. The ending is a cheap cliff hanger. The author set up a great conflict and drama about dealing with consequences of his alter egos actions, facing the people he cared about and hurt deeply, deciding how to move forward and a plot against him and his crown from a traitor. then the author changed his mind in the last 3 chapters to revisit a minor subplot that escalated in an unbelievable and uninteresting way. It feels like the author simply lost interest at the end. i will finish the series only because i am this far in.

I Loved the First 2! The 3rd Was a Waste of Time!

Would you try another book from Garon Whited and/or Sean Runnette?

I wouldn't buy another book by this author without reading the reviews of those who have read it already. I wouldn't start another trilogy by him without all 3 books having been released and knowing that I would enjoy all 3! There is nothing worse than loving the first 2 and then being let down with the 3rd book -- really let down -- as happened this time!

Would you ever listen to anything by Garon Whited again?

Yes, but with the hesitation that I just explained above.

Did Sean Runnette do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

The narrator was fine.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Orb?

I would revise the 3rd book taking out much of it and adding a satisfying ending.

Save yourself some time....

Just listen to the first couple of hours and the last couple of hours. The rest is rambling fluff that goes absolutely NOWHERE. Generally if I buy a long book I expect it to go somewhere, resolve something. Better yet, save yourself the money and don't buy this book at all.

I loved book 1, could live with book 2, but now I won't get book 4...

What a waste of time

The main character literally achieved absolutely nothing in this entire book. I don't think I've ever been so frustrated with any book I have ever read.

Frustrating

Totally despise main character. He seemed smart, clever and powerful in first two books until the ending of the second book. Now he's a tragic and foolish figure whom puts everyone he cares about into ever increasing danger. hopefully he will be killed outright early on in the next book and Mary can take over as the main character.

I can not stop listening

Third in the series so far and still just as enthralling. I barely take a breath of air before I sink back into the next one. As a matter of fact, I will be starting knightfall the second I have finished this review. This exciting tail of part, science part fantasy, part crazy is everything I look for in a book and more.

introspection

This is a diary that gets hard to follow in places as it's his journey and his thoughts and feelings but in other places it's laugh out loud funny

A thousand curse words

I don't normally leave reviews as I can rarely talk about a book without spoilers, so forewarning has now been given.
As usual for this series this book is a study in faith, not in any arbitrary god but in the main character finally not being screwed over more ways than I think it's possible to list.
But to give credit where credit is due It keeps drawing me back, it's a very well put together series and while I think the author forgets what he's already written before it's well written.
Overall a great book and series so far but damn does it hurt.

Amazing series

This series cannot be over hyped. Well written, funny, thought provoking books, wonderfully performed by Sean Runnette. I recommend these to anyone and everyone who has the slightest interest in Vampires, funny books, physics, magic and fire-breathing metal horses. Treat yourself to this fantastic book!
