Phoebe, the soulless child, was raised by her adopted father, Eric—the universe-hopping vampire wizard from the future. Who better to raise a soulless infant than an undead monster?

Now she's out on her own! Well, almost. She has her boyfriend, Rusty, the werewolf, trying to manage his anger issues, and her uncle, a divine entity with ego issues. So far, she's getting by, but there are issues of her own to deal with—not the least of which is a horde of feral vampires taking over the world!

That's okay. There are more worlds where that one came from. But it's harder to cope without her teddy bear.

What's a girl to do?

Into the Light is the second book of Phoebe's Tale, set between book seven, Fugue, and book eight, Penumbra, of the Nightlord series.

Book one was good enough to try book two. Book two however is a launching pad for a slew of great stories. This young lady has turned into a fantastic story element. I can’t wait for book 3. Oh yeah…. Another world class narration

Wow

Always entertaining and his storytelling and wordplay manages to keep the reader invested even if you’re not a huge student/fan of tech or magic construction.

Never bored

I usually don’t have any negativity regarding narrators. It’s my habit that if the voices don’t fit an audiobook I will absorb the fact, return the book and move on. Unfortunately I am a HUGE FAN of Garon Whited and the NIGHTLORD SERIES that he continues to give his creative energy into. Because of this fact, I tried to “tough it out” and tried to “absorb the story” while telling my brain to overlook the snarky, nasal, ungrateful to the “pop” she keeps insisting she loves and honors and how she continually refuses to acknowledge the words coming out of her mouth by refusing to take his opinion to heart which (SPOILER ALERT!!) ends up causing no end of trouble, death and tragedy to all and sundry while benefiting from the protection, foresight, and just plain common sense that Eric puts in place to try to protect her from the arrogance she never seems to grow out of, the selfish way she keeps using his resources to fund and support herself and her activities, etc. Meanwhile as all hell breaks loose around her she decides she’s qualified to punish the people she blames for “I don’t kill people because I’m not my pop so I want to show them the error of their ways and rehabilitate / reform them to be better people”. Meanwhile, she’s a home invasion expert, a thief, and vigilante and it’s ok because she’s targeting drug addicted users, drug dens, and a tiny portion of the actual people who are responsible for the driving force behind those lower echelons of the trade. She never focuses on the human trafficking offshoot of that whole world and in fact makes a deal with the vampires to leave that alone so they can have their livestock of humanity to feed themselves and she does all this to convince the vampires to help her go after and subdue the bad man using mind control on just about anyone so she can keep her pop from killing the guy because she wants to punish him, turn him into a nice person and send him on his way. (Sigh…) It’s bad enough that she’s got all these habits that are mostly about her but throw the narrative voice in that mix and it’s just annoying for me to listen to and worse than that,as if I needed a worse, her behavior drives Eric right out of the storyline so it’s not even about Nightlords anymore and this happens for 2 bloody books!
Now, usually I’m a big fan of offshoots that are fun and interesting but why Phoebe? She wasn’t an interesting character she wasn’t exceptionally brilliant as a child or adult and Eric is constantly having to move her around because she stubbornly refuses to follow the rules he puts in place to protect her so that by the time she’s grown I’m already looking forward to her either killing herself off or going off on her own so Eric can start NIGHTLORDing again and we can find out how he fixes his problems with time and getting his real family and friends out of trouble and to safety. I just don’t get this distraction! I absolutely cannot stand another minute of Phoebe. The story seems to be going towards how Eric’s alterego might be a lying scheming diety in a clone in the box that ends up lying to both Phoebe and Eric and probably killed Phoebe’s physical body in order to get her to the plane he’s on for some reason I’m pretty sure is going to become a whole other offshoot to squeeze out another few irritating not NIGHTLORDS or Eric, etc.
I just don’t understand why Garon Whited is taking an awesomely good series and now seems to be destroying its future with this weirdness! And to top it off with a narrator who I can’t even force myself to put up with long enough to actually finish this second book in what might turn into a never ending offshoot about a stubborn, unlikable, self proclaimed heroine without common sense or reality based thinking processes. I give up.
Even the next book in the actual NIGHTLORDS SERIES is about making Eric into a totally different person. What’s the goal here and I’m having trouble even believing that this is the same writer! Is it some AI generated something? Has Garon Whited forgotten the storyline and now seeks to destroy a great character? I just don’t get the direction and worse than that I don’t actually even care enough to spend more credits on finding out. As far as I’m concerned I’d just wait for the next in this series to hit my local library if I ever find myself curious.
The thing I really dislike is that I just don’t really care. I don’t care what Phoebe or Eric or “Uncle Dusty” decide to do. I’m just looking for another series I can like to do what stories are supposed to do by taking me away to another universe or whatever so I can enjoy myself. I’m sad that this writer and whoever is advising them has destroyed what could have been a great working of imagination. As a listener / reader I’m sad but I’m seriously happy if I never have to listen to this narrator under these circumstances again. Another story might have built this narrator’s career. Her voice just doesn’t fit Phoebe at all. And if someone has a thought that this is because it’s about a female voice it’s truly not like that. I absolutely LOVE the codex Alera series and the female narrator. That is an awesome listen. A story about a male character read by a female?! Awesomely good 👍🏽
I just re-read what I’ve written for this review. I guess I’m more irritated than I thought and probably because I’ve lost and given up a Series that I really liked and enjoyed. It’s saddening when this kind of thing happens and sometimes it does but I guess I just didn’t expect it to happen with NIGHTLORD. It could have been cool if maybe they chose to tell Mary’s story. Too bad.

I absolutely hate the Phoebe voice.
