Publisher's Summary

Holly's cauldron is bubbling over and ready to blow!

Following six months of intense training under some of the country's most skilled potion masters, Holly's head is full to the brim.

When she's offered a new assignment with the Supernatural Protection Agency, she jumps at the chance to take her newfound skills out of the workshop and into the real world.

What she didn't expect was to wind up tailing a suspected werewolf killer right in her own backyard.

Literally.

When another werewolf turns up dead, Holly and her roommates are locked in a race against time, and the killer might be even closer than they think.

Holly Drives Me Crazy, But Always Ends Well

I have to say this story I was probably the most irritated I've been with our main character Holly in the whole series. Holly is her typical bemoaning that trouble always finds her when she is constantly engaging in situations then insisting she has no choice because doing so allows her certain bonuses that benefit her and her alone. She has conflict and complaints about not being able to do the things she needs due to space and time but then rebuffs her boyfriend's requests to explore independent housing and turning down extraneous obligations. She is jealous of every new woman that starts to room at the manor and gets incredibly adversarial with Nic when he is with other women but insists she is not jealous and her interests are only platonic. I was also pretty annoyed when MINOR SPOILER the SPA insists that Holly monitor the new manor roomie but the SPA states Nic can't be in the know because Holly saw him go out with the person one time and he would therefore be compromised and Holly should monitor them both. It felt so forced to use such a flimsy reason especially considering the new roommate had been in town one day and that this would mean Holly would be massively compromised considering her close relationship to Nic. The entire story seems to take place in maybe just over a week so everything is happening very quickly. We do have a brief little cameo from some old friends (I also highly recommend listening to Once Upon a Hallow's Eve which seems to land between Lucky Witch and this volume but you won't be lost if you don't check it out). Holly is hot tempered, rarely listens to reason or even her friends who try to call her out about her behavior. BUT by the end things are always wrapped up, Holly suddenly shows slight self-awareness and is suddenly available to things she has not be the entire story. I will also say I really enjoyed some of the cool magical advancements Holly is making and enjoy seeing more magical incorporation into the story. The early start of the story the relationship between Holly and Adam still seems so rough (she often forgetting him or leaving him for other activities and conversations still end with Adam apologizing), but feel like as the story progressed they fell into a better rhythm. The series continues to progress the mystery doesn't feel like a mystery more of a drama and you get the standard face palm Holly behavior that fans of this series have come to expect from the fiery spell caster.

danielle!

I love the setting, a cute coastal town. I love that she is 30, and it takes place in modern day. I just wish the books were longer!

Consistently excellent writing /narration

Well Amanda Ronconi is an amazing narrator which is a huge factor in these fresh well written paranormal mysteries. The author avoids cliche and presents well crafted mysteries and well fleshed out characters.
