Story
In this remarkable book, Malidoma Some explores the essential role ritual plays in maintaining community and examines the structure common to all ritual. By telling stories of the rituals of his native West African Dagara culture, and his own experiences in the tribal community, he makes a convincing case that the lack of ritual in the Western world is a fundamental reason that the fabric of society is unravelling.

How do we get ourselves out of the foreground of our thoughts and achieve compassion? The speech captures Wallace's electric intellect as well as his grace in attention to others.

In the United States, teenagers can focus on one task for only sixty-five seconds at a time, and office workers average only three minutes. Like so many of us, Johann Hari was finding that constantly switching from device to device and tab to tab was a diminishing and depressing way to live. He tried all sorts of self-help solutions—even abandoning his phone for three months—but nothing seemed to work. So Hari went on an epic journey across the world to interview the leading experts on human attention—and he discovered that everything we think we know about this crisis is wrong.

Publisher's summary
Born in West Africa in the early 1950s, Somé was kidnapped at age four by a French Jesuit missionary to be trained as a priest, for the next 15 years enduring the harsh regimen of a seminary where his native language and tribal traditions were systematically suppressed. At age 20 he escaped, but when he returned to his Dugara people in Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso) they rejected him as an outsider. To reconnect with his native culture, Somé underwent a month-long initiation into shamanism during which he reports that he journeyed to the underworld, became a bird, then a porcupine, and was buried alive.

I loved this book...his story is the story of all of us if we will pause, surrender and listen to the voices of our ancestors...they are the bridge to our future but we have to be willing to "let go" of who we "think" we are to become who we "already are"!!! I am ready for my initiation...

I'm really glad that I got the audible book because I felt like I was actually experiencing the same thing as the author. I could have read the story myself, but his voice and inflections added to the overall story. I feel like I was lead to this book spiritually, and that it was needed for this particular moment in my life. We are indeed interconnected, and the sooner we get this understanding; the better it will be for the entire world. Ase'

Must listen!
I would recommend listening to this book, not reading it, because the story is told rather than read by the author. This gives the story a richness and presence that other books lack due to the usual homogenized structure of audiobooks. And that lack of structure goes perfectly with this beautiful, short story about the author's childhood and initiation. I've thought of this book for weeks since finishing it. I've had various thoughts about the lost knowledge, mythos and sense of place that I, most of us, will never know. What a loss that is and could we even reach back from here and find any of it left?

A rear gem, previous indigenous wisdom heritage! Thanks!
The whole teaching of the author’s book is viscerally transformative. What an urgently needed offering for our time! 💚🙏
In the conclusion part, the author describes that the elders wish him to be the messenger to talk to the strange enemy “the white men”, who from historical record we know have inflicted unspeakable suffering on the African indigenous.
I teared up hearing that all the elders said was just “to show them what they might have overlooked when they first came to the village”.
What a cosmic heart of gentleness, forgiveness and spaciousness these beautiful indigenous people have got besting in their chest! And how much they and their younger generation have suffered!
We must become humble and gracious students and children of these previous indigenous heritages, if we wanna to
Work together to help our world out of the crisis of wars, segregation and mutual exploitation and exploitation of our Mother Earth. 💚💚

Moved to tears
Having lived in a remote Aboriginal community where boys go through initiation, but women are not privy to what happens, I found the magical aspect awe inspiring. When Malidoma spoke of the need for initiation, but not in the traditional sense as he went through something touched me deeply. Onwards from here I had tears in my eyes, like he was speaking to me. Very moving and beautiful. Thank you.
