In the first book of this bestselling mystery series, criminal investigator Larry Macklin is faced with a mutilated corpse that he suspects is tied to the smokey ruins of an old home in his rural North Florida town. The difficulty for Larry is that the arson case is in the hands of an investigator who despises him. On top of all this, Larry must navigate the difficult relationship he has with the sheriff, who is not only his boss but also his father. The case heats up as Larry suspects that the motive for the murder is buried in his father's past. The common thread is a tight group of friends who were in high school together in the '70s. Before Larry can rule any of them out as the killer, one of them is killed. Why is the murderer targeting this particular group? What secrets are worth killing for decades later? Larry is running out of time and suspects, and his search for the truth may make him the next victim

This this taut thriller will leave you guessing until the very end.

Same as always - good story. The voice is consistently paced, reflecting all the different characters. Can feel their mood.

This is a good mystery. It is an easy book to listen to. I like the way it's based in a small town. I like how Larry handles his job. He's laid back but smart to. His Father is his boss. But he doesn't get any special treatment. I prefer when the partners get along and like each other and work together. But I enjoyed this book. James D. Sasser did a good job narrating this book.
