Critic Reviews

“A charming collection of short almost-stories intended as an antidote to insomnia and restlessness.... Nicolai accomplishes what no other author would want to hear: these stories can put people to sleep.” (Publishers Weekly)

“This collection of very short stories is designed to help readers fall and stay asleep. The stories follow the seasons, starting with winter, and rely heavily on the senses; there are a lot of lovely smells, soft and comfy things, and delicious foods, all described in detail and often accompanied by illustrations in muted tones. Peppered throughout are recipes, meditations, and other relaxation techniques.... The stories do succeed in their goal of helping readers sleep better, and couldn’t we all use more of that?” (Booklist

love love love

I'm not one to write reviews, however I just had to on this book!
first off I love her narration, she is soft and soothing and takes you right into her story.
a lot of times I will not purchase a audio book if I cant deal with the readers voice and sadly many readers have a poor or annoying voice "sorry just being honest".
when I was a child I would lay in bed and imagine all sorts of story's about being in new places and what everything would be like. Till this day I still do it, this is what caught my attention to her book along with her yoga experience and breathing study's I just had to listen and oh my gosh I'm so glad I did. I work in the medical field so many days I'm socially drained and my heart is heavy from the sadness I see on a daily basis, listening to this last night totally relaxed me brought joy to my heart! I'm already in anticipation that she will have another book soon.. looking forward to hearing it again tonight.. she must be a Angel!!

Sweet Dreams

I’m already a fan of the podcast Nothing Much Happens, so it’s no surprise that I love the audiobook as well! The authors voice is perfect for settling me down to sleep, and the stories are all sweet little vignettes full of simple pleasures.

It's the podcast but better...

I have been a fan of Kathryn Nicolai's podcast of the same name for a while now. I listen to her soothing voice reading her calming stories nearly every night. For someone with sleep issues stemming back to childhood trauma to be able to say her work and voice makes me feel safe says a lot.

The podcast is great but I'd sometimes be awake for the next story, or simply want to listen to several as I rest during the day without actually trying to sleep, and have to listen to the intro to the next story which was frustrating. With this book, there's no intro interrupting between stories.

I also must say that these are some of her absolute best. They're perfect. They're pure, calming, delicate, soothing, comforting, and warm.

Thank you for writing and reading this book, Kathryn.

Didnt like this at all

I really wanted to love this and bought this based on the great reviews. The author was likeable and its obvious SHE desires to help people. The problem was the stories were not relaxing. The storylines took place out in the busy world such as on a street corner or chatting with a waitress. There was nothing relaxing about it. I love the concept of nothing much happening but next time I would like to see the author explore quiet or contained inner worlds rather than just going about her day. Also, I found it distracting that the author would include commentary between stories. It completely blocked the sleep flow and made me more alert. It was an annoying format. I suggest Stories for Getting Back to Sleep by Diane Gillespie for a truly relaxing meditative experience.

I love the podcast and the book. I listen to the book every night and it helps me fall asleep and if I wake up in the night, which I always do, I just keep listening and fall right back to sleep.

The best.

The stories are lovely, inclusive and relaxing. The voice will carry you away. This book is absolutely the best in the sleep genre. Even if you listen the podcast, you’re missing out on the new stories and they are really beautiful.

Just what I was looking for!

I have been looking for something to listen too when I wake up in the night - otherwise my mind will begin to try to solve all of the problems in the world. I tried other "Bedtime Stories for Adults" type books and they were all focused on meditation. I didn't find that relaxing - instead of drifting back off to sleep, I was then focused on the steps involved with their meditation (and the voices of some were off-putting). Nothing Much Happens is exactly what I was looking for. Sweet little stories that engage your mind just enough - but are calming and soothing at the same time. I was also impressed with the narration. Many calming-type audiobooks are syrupy in the narration to the point of cringing. Kathryn Nicolai understood the assignment ;) Well done!!

Your a miracle worker!!

For years I’ve struggled with insomnia for no good reason at all. Finding your podcast was the best thing that has happened to me. Since listening to you nightly I’ve been learning how to train my mind to your stories and the relaxing Sensations they bring. No amount of melatonin could do what your stories do. Thank you for your stories and your help for a peaceful sleep after so many years of sleepless nights.
