Audible Editor Reviews

Why we think it's Essential: Astute critic and biographer Christopher Hitchens comes out swinging in this—dare I say it—enjoyable discussion of religions worldwide. Believers and nonbelievers alike will find value in listening to this provocative book that comes at a time when people the world over are reeling from news of terrorist acts inspired by religious fundamentalism. Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins have trod this road in recent years, but it is Hitchens who achieves the most memorable exploration. –Corey Thrasher

Publisher's Summary

In the tradition of Bertrand Russell's Why I Am Not a Christian and Sam Harris' recent best-seller, The End of Faith, Christopher Hitchens makes the ultimate case against religion. With a close and erudite reading of the major religious texts, he documents the ways in which religion is a man-made wish, a cause of dangerous sexual repression, and a distortion of our origins in the cosmos. With eloquent clarity, Hitchens frames the argument for a more secular life based on science and reason, in which hell is replaced by the Hubble Telescope's view of the universe, and Moses and the burning bush give way to the beauty of the double helix.

"The most rhetorically gifted man of our time."

Christopher Hitchens must be the most rhetorically gifted writer/speaker of our time; pure genius, in deed. For him to read his own work was a masterstroke as his voice was always so incredibly captivating.

"very good to read but not so to listen"

the author mumbles too much for my taste which makes the listening difficult in noisy environments... if you find another reader go for it.

Very good content. But the narration is horrible. Monotonous tone .. No pause. Found it extremely difficult to listen.

"Very thorough and in-depth. Well done."

Beautifully written and narrated. This book illustrates in fine detail how religion infiltrates nearly every aspect of culture. Mr. Hitchens' scholarly view and warm voice are both more comforting than any religion.

Intelligence with savior faire. His pen is mightier than any sword and blasts the light of reason upon those who want to stay in the dark.

    "Liked it but,"

As much as I love listening to Hitchens speak, this book would have benefited from a professional narrator. Hitchens's voice sometimes goes really low and it's hard to understand, at least for someone like me who speaks English as second language.

    "Difficult to follow"

I enjoy hearing the author read his own book, but he reads way too fast. I couldn't keep up, as he left few pauses, and the material is dense. I got tired of pausing the book. I'll need to listen several times to absorb it; fortunately, his writing style is so enjoyable that I don't mind spending this much time with his book.

    "A Great Work of Truth"

A great book read by the man himself. Today is a sad day indeed.

....One of my first audiobooks and still one of my favourites.
