Publisher's Summary

A Sunday Times best seller

The gripping Dirk Pitt classic from multimillion-copy king of the adventure novel, Clive Cussler.

May 1914. Two diplomats hurry home by sea and rail, each carrying a document of world-changing importance. Then the liner Empress of India is sunk in a collision, and the Manhattan-Line express plunges from a bridge - both dragging their VIP passengers to watery oblivion. Tragic coincidence or conspiracy?

In the energy-starved, fear-torn 1980s, Dirk Pitt discovers that those long-lost papers could destroy whole nations, throwing him into his biggest challenge yet. Racing against hired killers, he launches his revolutionary deep-sea search craft and faces the horrors of the sea bed to hunt for the documents. 'Night Probe' has begun....

A bit far fetched.

Great buildup, but then became a bit far fetched. I would recommend the book for entertainment but a bit dissapointed with some military unit naming inaccuracies, and the eventual far fetched nature of the story.

Loads of fun!

Loads of fun! I really like all the characters, I enjoy the writing. My brain isn't taxed but there's enough going on to keep me interested.

Great Cussler - massively dated & politically naive

This is what it is: beach thriller - it’s fun, it’s dumb and mildly offensive to the British and the Commonwealth.

The basic problem being that the Commonwealth is -not- an Imperial power run by the UK, and it’s just not hard to find that out.

Then the political situation just doesn’t work, never mind the legal implications.

I guess it’s a book of it’s time and it is early Cussler.
It’s also equally full of pretty tone deaf and dated social norms. Which are grating on a modern listener.

Lastly - I have no idea how he wasn’t sued for one of the characters 🤣

Solid writing with usual Cussler flaw (the women).

Solid writing of an adventure action story - as usual.
Female characters sidelined and ruled by their emotions - as usual.
Great narration by Scott Brick - as usual.

Unusually high demand for suspension of disbelief to enjoy the story completely. Still - quite an engaging listen.

The storyline is entertaining and intriguing. The tales of Pitt as usual don't disappoint.

The book itself is a great one, with a solid story telling and good suspense. Scott Brick is very good in bringing you in.

Early Cussler

The story flowed, but unresolved complications.
Had a good underlying theme but the sub plots didn't connect on so well. A harbinger of good books to come.

Very enjoyable

I’ve been slowly listening my way through the Dirk Pitt series and find every book as satisfying as the previous.
