Publisher's summary

A heart-pounding novel of unspeakable crimes and unforgivable sins from the number one New York Times best-selling author of The Sound of Rain.

Homicide detective Nicole Foster has finally balanced an unsteady life and is anxious for a second chance. There’s no better place to start over than at the beginning—back at her childhood home on the Washington coast, where’s she raising her niece and keeping an eye on her increasingly fragile father. But Nicole’s past is never truly behind her—not when a disturbing new case stirs dark memories of the haunting investigation that shattered her career.

In the middle of the hottest August in a century, a toddler is found dead inside a parked car. Her father says he forgot her. It’s an unthinkable crime. And for Nicole, it’s made all the more unbearable by her own suffocating secrets—those shared by an old rival who has reappeared from the shadows and is pushing Nicole to the edge once again.

Now, wherever the truth lies, solving this case and avenging an unforgivable death is the most important move in Nicole’s career. But to see it through to the end, how far is she willing to go? And what is she prepared to risk this time?

GRIPPING and A VERY SATISFYING ENDING! :)

Gregg Olsen is one of my favorite authors for this genre….if not MY NUMBER ONE❤️ :) He really knows how to pull you in and keep you guessing while throwing in unexpected twists and turns every step of the way! I LOVE that! I’ll THINK I have something figured out when all of a sudden he throws that curveball he’s so GREAT at doing! He creates such GREAT characters who you grow very attached to….well, the ones who AREN’T the perps or who are just flat out unlikable anyways lol! HUGE FAN!

Tough read but very well executed

This audiobook was very well written. While it revolves around a very difficult topic, it was handled very well – with sensitivity.

Sad that the ending was rushed

This book had such build up but then ended the entire case in less than 10 minutes. That was a very lame let down.

About the same as the 1st

I'd like to say I enjoyed this 2nd book in the series more than the 1st, but I didn't. I just really can not get into the whining of Nicole Foster as a lead character. According to her, everything wrong in her life is because of her parents (who liked her sister more) and her prettier sister. Really???? Take some responsibilities for your own actions like having a gambling addiction which cost you a job you loved. This story focused more on her life than the life of the 1 year old left in the car to die. I would rather have heard more back story on that family instead of all the repeated whining from Nicole. Even if there is another book in this series, I think I will let it pass by without reading it. I don't think I can handle anymore of Nicole. The one saving grace in this story was then ending. However, it just didn't make up for everything prior to that.

Not enough depth

only two issues to be resolved. insufficient for this length of book. needed additional factors for added interest.
