Publisher's summary
Bruno, the beloved chief of police in the idyllic French town of St. Denis, is back! This time a mysterious death brings ancient secrets to light, and it's up to our hero - and favorite gourmand - to connect the tangled threads of past and present.
When a woman's body is found at the foot of a cliff near St. Denis, Bruno suspects a connection to the great ruin that stands on the cliff above: the Chateau de Commarque, a long-ago Knights Templar stronghold that, along with the labyrinth of prehistoric caves beneath it, continues to draw the interest of scholars. With the help of Amelie, a young newcomer to the Dordogne, Bruno learns that the dead woman was an archaeologist searching for a religious artifact of incredible importance, the discovery of which could have dramatic repercussions throughout the Middle East - not to mention in St. Denis. And the woman's ties to Islamic terrorists can only heighten the pressure on Bruno to unravel the centuries-old mystery. Meanwhile, an old flame of Bruno's is assigned to work with him on the case, and the two find time, naturellement, to enjoy the supreme pleasures of the wine, food, and beauty of the Dordogne.

Story
Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measure of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors---among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed.

During intermission at the famed La Fenice opera house in Venice, Italy, a notoriously difficult and widely disliked German conductor is poisoned—and suspects abound. Guido Brunetti, a native Venetian, sets out to unravel the mystery behind the high-profile murder. To do so, he calls on his knowledge of Venice, its culture, and its dirty politics. Once again a great read
I always love his descriptions of French country cuisine and culture. But why, if the main character is French, is the narrator speaking with an English accent? His female character voices are grating. Aside from the English accent issue the narrator does well with male characters.

More complex than most but always satisfying
The story line about a possibility nonexistent or forged document was rather strained but it really didn’t matter because the company of Bruno and his friends is so enjoyable. There is also interesting historical information on the Templars and the book ends with an interesting hook. Dare one hope? It was nice too that there was an attractive, intelligent woman in the story without Bruno falling into bed with her.

This series just keeps getting better
I love how the ongoing story of Bruno, local policeman, self taught chef, and friend to all on his small countryside community gets better with each book. The descriptions of French landscapes, food and wine, along with interesting characters, makes this series one of my favorites!

Iffy claims against clergy and local citizens who disagree. A woman found dead at the bottom of a famous cliff. A political observer assigned to shadow Bruno. A suspect Arab manuscript. Possible relics from the Knights Templar. Terrorists. Personal problems and a wedding between two noted archaeologists of the area. Lots of things going on and a dramatic conclusion to another Bruno story!
Another unputdownable tale centered around a highly intelligent man who is not interested in fame nor climbing the ladder of police hierarchy.
Voice actor Robert Ian MacKenzie is excellent with interpretation and character definition, and superior in the rolling tones of French pronunciations.

The Best of Bruno so far!
The story of the attack by Islamic terrorists fits perfectly into today’s live news story of President Macron’s vow to do something about the violence that has steadily increased in France in recent days.
The characters that Walker adds to Bruno’ s coterie continues to intrigue and the education of Bruno by another female assistant moved us further and further into the 21st century.
And I was thrilled to see Isabel back in the picture.
