It is very early in Jack Ryan’s career—so early that he has not yet even become an analyst for the CIA. But a series of nasty encounters with an IRA splinter group has brought Ryan to the attention of the CIA’s Deputy Director and his British counterpart. They offer him his first job as a freelance analyst, and he readily accepts. Debriefing a high-level Russian defector, however, he comes across an unbelievable plot: top Soviet officials, including Yuri Andropov, are planning to assassinate Pope John Paul II. Ryan must battle first to verify the plot, and then to stop it. But what chance does a novice CIA analyst have against a cat-and-mouse game between the world’s two great superpowers?

That you can immediately hit play and re-enter a beloved new world, or love story, or era from history is a gift to the devoted listener. But how to pick just 100 of these unique and immersive listening journeys? We defined a series as having a minimum of three books, and—after some debate—we decided the titles had to be anchored in fiction. I started listening to "Red Rabbit" right after I finished Robert Littell's "The Company", so I have to admit there was a threshold to trip over before I got into the book. It seemed to start _very_ slowly, and took about 6 hours before you got past setting up the plot, identifying the characters, and moving into the story. It felt longer.

Once the plot got moving, the book was enjoyable, and getting a prequel look into Ryan made for a good story with some interesting references. What I didn't like was how deep Clancy went into the thoughts of the characters, especially at the beginning of the book. Setting a character up is one thing, but following a character's mind-trip as he thinks about 50 different concepts gets real old, real fast. Scott Brick, the narrator, is one of my favorites - but even he couldn't help me wade through that stuff any faster. Maybe this is the kind of junk they skip over in the abridged versions. If so, I understand why.

Good read, but slow to get going

This was a complete waste of a credit. I am 20 hours into this book and I have no idea what it is supposed to be about. I know Ryan and family ended up in England for some reason. Everything else is OVER described in this book, but not why they’re in England, unless I slept through the reason. I know the Russians are plotting to kill the Pope because he’s threatening to quit and go back to Poland. 10 hours of listening and that’s all I’ve gotten out of this book. If it weren’t for Scot Brick, I would not have made it 2 hours. I just can’t invest anymore time listening to this. It reads like a shopping list.

Boring

I enjoyed this book immensely. I have read many of his books and this is one of my favorites. I wish I good get more Clancy in Unabridged version.

Excellent!!!

This book has good moments and an interesting story, but it's not a thriller.

Overall, I am a satisfied customer. The book progresses like clockwork but it did not give me the thrill of a Hurwitz book.Orphan X does not have the same great story like Red Rabbit, but gives you a crazy and thrilling story to follow.

First Clancy Book for Me

I like the story and delivery but the right wing patriarchal message is too much. And I’m an upper middle white guy. Maybe it sounded better 30 years ago...

Arduous journey through lense of Ronald Raegan

I read a lot of reviews before my own because I thought I would see a bunch more about the narrator. Maybe everyone likes their own style, but I can't understand how anybody can think Scott Brick is a good fit for this novel. In my opinion he reads as if he's reading Harry Potter to a class of 2nd graders. Huge inflections where none is needed, often so the entire meaning of the dialogue is missed. Happy high energy tones for a KGB agent planning evil things. Loud, drawn out yelling when the literal text follows...."said tersely". Very strange how many good reviews for him I've seen. Think I'll just read this one instead.

Don't know if I can finish this.

I enjoy Tom Clancy's books. I do wish he would keep them in order, so as not to listen to a book now. then listen to another one that is taling about years earlier. I like to keep timelines up to date so can listen to books in order. Tom does end to drag his books out some, but well worth the extra time. I especially enjoyed the defector..the rabbit, and Jack Ryan at it again, but would like to know before hand which time period they are so can keep them in order. I last listed to John Kelly becone John Clarke, so gets a bit confusing.

Clancy does it again

i was disappointed, the story seemed to lag The narrators voice was loud then soft and I missed words. It didn't keep me on the edge of my seat like the other books

slow mover

Which character – as performed by Scott Brick – was your favorite?

He is a great Jack Ryan, but his upper-class English accent is wholly unrealistic.

Any additional comments?

Scott Brick has a terrible habit of dropping aitches, particularly with the verb "to have."

Scott Brick is great, BUT . . .

A little slow for a Clancy story but excellent insight into the How of the game.

Excellent Performance
