From the New York Times best-selling author of the Gray Man series comes a startlingly realistic novel of World War III.

A desperate Kremlin takes advantage of a military crisis in Asia to simultaneously strike into Western Europe and invade east Africa in a bid to occupy three rare Earth mineral mines that will give Russia unprecedented control over the world's hi-tech sector for generations to come.

Pitted against the Russians are a Marine lieutenant colonel pulled out of a cushy Pentagon job, a French Special Forces captain and his intelligence operative father, a young Polish partisan fighter, an A-10 Warthog pilot, and the commander of an American tank platoon who, along with his German counterpart, fight from behind enemy lines.

Through grand land, sea, and air battles to a small unit fighting hand-to-hand in the jungle, Russia and the US face off in a terrifying but thrilling battle for world dominance - with constant the threat of a Russian nuclear detonation ever present.

If you like fictional "What If" war stories such as Tom Clancy's RED STORM RISING or SWORDPOINT,.....................
A good story teller Mark Greaney combines with an expert Military advisor Lieutenant Colonel Hunter Ripley Raulings USMC to create a real page turner of a Military novel. Could it happen ?? Maybe....Maybe not.But if it did [or something like it] the tactics and state of the art weapons systems could be utilized as described.
In a nutshell that and a great story is it's appeal. In fact there is so much there I will listen to it again in a few weeks and enjoy it just as much. Listening to Red Metal for 21 hours and 21 minutes.it seemed to pass very quickly.
Probably more of a guy book but there are strong believable female warrior characters for women that might enjoy a good Tom Clancy novel. This would make for a Great Beach book.

A bit hard to get attached to most characters as so many things happening at once

Multiple story lines

Like others have said, hang in there for the first four hours. It is nonstop after that! Awesome plot and characters.

Outstanding!!

I like the format and the character development was great. Sympathetic characters on both sides and no shortage of true grit.

Top Drawer. I found it Riveting

I almost stopped listening to this book, half way through but am glad I finished it. This book moves very fast with lots of heart pounding action. But the writer gave Russia some sort of superpowers in this novel, compared to what a real conflict with Russia might look like. First of all, when Russia invades Poland in this book, Poland a NATO member would've initiated Article 5 of the NATO treaty. Russia would've been at war with every NATO country in reality. To top things off, Russia starts a war over obtaining a stupid mine. Crazy. Then, Russia has boat loads of T14 Armata's, and SU 54's, which T14's aren't even in production yet and Russia only has a few SU54's. Somehow the writer forgets the US has F35's, F22's and B2 Bombers which could've wiped the Russians off the map. However, that might not have made for a riveting book. The US and our allies reacted to this Russian invasion like "what do we do? I guess nothing". Then finally they whip together a rag tag groups of soldiers to react and win the day. Great.

Fast Moving, heavy hitting but pretty unrealistic
