From the legendary #1 New York Times bestselling author of Plum Island and Night Fall comes this “action-packed, relentlessly paced thriller” (Publishers Weekly, starred review) featuring US Army combat veteran Daniel “Mac” MacCormick, now a charter boat captain, who is about to set sail on his most dangerous cruise.

Daniel “Mac” Graham MacCormick seems to have a pretty good life. At age thirty-five he’s living in Key West, owner of a forty-two-foot charter fishing boat The Maine. But after serving five years in the Army and purchasing a boat with a big bank loan, Mac’s finances are more than a little shaky.

One day, Mac is sitting in the famous Green Parrot Bar, contemplating his life, and waiting for Carlos, a hotshot Miami lawyer heavily involved with anti-Castro groups. Carlos wants to hire Mac and The Maine for a ten-day fishing tournament to Cuba at the standard rate, but Mac suspects there is more to this and turns it down. The price then goes up to two million dollars, and Mac agrees to hear the deal, and meet Carlos’s clients—a beautiful Cuban-American woman named Sara Ortega, and a mysterious older Cuban exile, Eduardo Valazquez.

What Mac learns is that there is sixty million American dollars hidden in Cuba by Sara’s grandfather when he fled Castro’s revolution. With the “Cuban Thaw” underway between Havana and Washington, Carlos, Eduardo, and Sara know it’s only a matter of time before someone finds the stash—by accident or on purpose. And Mac knows if he accepts this job, he’ll walk away rich…or not at all.

Nelson DeMille is my favorite author so it's tough to write this review. I was looking forward to a new character but Mac is John Corey and Paul Brenner...same sarcasm, same ego, same inner monologue and the story reads far too similar to Up Country which is arguably my favorite DeMille book...foreign country, secret police, love interest that doesn't tell the truth etc. Overall I enjoyed it as I do all of his books but wouldn't rave about it.

Too much like Up Country

The story is great but instead think 1/3 of it can be deleted without effecting the story like or the characters. Great audio performance.

Great story but excruciatingly long

Felt Time this book had some brilliant moments, but also some moments of hilariously bad writing. The story was good, but felt super cheesy at times. Also, this was

I am a longtime fan of both DeMille and Brick. I have read every DeMille book narrated by Brick and most of the remaining books. In general, together they are unstoppable. This book falls short though. I struggled to care about the characters and found the love story difficult to choke down. I finished and will pre-order his next novel, but I will not be re-reading this, ever.

Not DeMille's Magnum Opus

I was engaged from start to finish and find the entire historical depth into the Cuban Revolution fascinating and very well-written.

Captivating!

Good book from beginning to end, excellent plot, plot twists, & character development. Read extremely well by Scott Brick!

Recommended read!

I hope that we hear again from “Mac” ... although I have perhaps loved other DeMille stories more, I thought back to my first John Cory and realized that our love for that character grew exponentially with each new story. Looking forward to growing with Mac also.

Another DeMille story unfolds wonderful characters and plot.

What made the experience of listening to The Cuban Affair the most enjoyable?

The narrator, Scott Brick is PREFECT for a DeMille novel. He portrayed all the characters really well, and he leads you through the action parts with just the right amount of excitement, too.

What other book might you compare The Cuban Affair to and why?

Can't say......I've only ever read hard cover copied of DeMille's other books.

What does Scott Brick bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Everything !!! I could picture the main character, Mack, perfectly and the visuals of both key West and Cuba were brought to life by Scott's narration.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Too many to mention.

Any additional comments?

Listen to this book, you'll be really glad you did!

Great DeMille and Excellent Narrator!

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

I would not recommend this book

Would you ever listen to anything by Nelson DeMille again?

yes, generally I like nelson demille

Which scene was your favorite?

dnt remember

Do you think The Cuban Affair needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

maybe

Any additional comments?

The book was a little contrived. there was not a particular reason for this affair to get off the ground except the woman was good looking. In life, and in other books, there is usually a bit more going on.

contrived
