Publisher's Summary

The glamour and romance of the glittering 30s darkened for ever by the outbreak of war.

On a bright September morning in 1939, two days after Britain has declared war, a group of privileged but desperate people gather in Southampton to board the largest, most luxurious airliner ever built - the Pan American Clipper, bound for New York: an English aristocrat, fleeing with his family and a fortune in jewels; a German scientist, escaping from the Nazis; a murderer under FBI escort; a young wife running away from a domineering husband; and a handsome, unscrupulous thief . . .

Abridged did not work for me

Sadly I won't recommend the abridged version, simply didn't work at all. Well read but content totally lacking.

Classic!

I loved when I first read the book and loved now to listen it again. Great story, great style and great narration!
I wish it wasn't abridged so I could listen more...

Almost excellent ... but

Very almost an excellent purchase. Great story, well written, well-researched. If only, if only they had chosen a different reader. Clive Mantle has an excellent reading voice, clear, precise, tonal and expressive and yet, somehow (at least for me) it just didn't work for this book.

Other than that, really good!

Fascinating plot and GREAT value

if, like me, you are a pilot, or an aviation "buff", then you will appreciate the research into The Boeing Clipper, that has been done as background to this fantastic tale. The twists in the plot(s) and the character portrayals by Ken Follett, are truly masterful, and keep you intrigued right to the very last word. If you want a truly entertaining Novel, this is it.
