Critic Reviews

"Clancy's latest novel traces the financial, political, military, and personal machinations that drive America into the next major global war.... a shocker climax so plausible you'll wonder why it hasn't yet happened. ( Entertainment Weekly)

Vintage Clancy - Deserves a Better Narrator

Having read and enjoyed the book when it first came out in hardcover, I've just been waiting for the unabridged audible edition. I'm not sure I'll be able to stand the monotone narration for 36 hours. It's the worst I've ever heard.

As I drive a lot I love audible books. I have over 200 titles and must say this is THE READING ON THIS IS HORRIBLE. It sounds like a bad computer voice and often does run on sentences (no pause between sentences or paragraphs as most every reader in the world would do).

The story is classic Clancy. I have read all his books years ago and love them. I was going to listen to them in order but can't finish this one due to performance.

Bottom line is this book needs to be re-done as it is not up to Audible or Clancy standards....

Narrator not so great

I love Clancy books, but this Narrator is too robotic. Doesn't even sound human to me.

Debt of Honor

Do NOT listen to this book while driving!!!!!!!!! This is a GREAT book, the narrator sucks, this guy had to be hired to do the computer voice for my Co-Pilot Truck GPS program.

I would have enjoyed Jack Sondericker or Scott Brick as a narrator, a Tom Clancy book deserves better............

The story as always is outstanding. The recording is the worst I have ever heard. If you ever wondered how a book would sound if it was read by a computer this is it.. The speed is so slow I thought I had it on my IPhone at half speed when I checked I was listening to my IPOD. I have donwloaded over 200 books and this would be the first time I asked for a refund. Save your money until they fix their mistake.

computer generated voice

The engineer that produced this should be taken out and shoot. I can not believe
that this is the voice of a real person narrating. I just could not listen longer than the first chapter. A real waste of time and money.

Excellent story, bad sound, bad narrator

I almost stopped listening to this in the first two hours, but stuck it out, and the story was worth it, honestly. However, those first two listening to human Valium. I don't know which to blame: the engineering, or the narrator, but whichever is is one of the worst sounding audiobooks I have ever listened to.

Great Story, Terrible Narration

Make sure you listen to the audio sample before buying this audiobook. It's very monotone and robotic. I enjoyed the story but it would have been much more enjoyable with a better narrator.

Bad Sound Engineering

It is not the narrator's fault that this sounds like a monotone robot. This is a bad transfer. It sounds like they recorded it at one speed, then slowed it down so that many words are now slurred and drawn out. Also I feel that the "robot" problem is also from the transfer, by clipping off the upper and lower ranges of the sound pitches, it now sounds artificial in a lot of places.

Clancy's best novel, but poorly narrated

Listened from start to finish; I love the story but wish it was someone else narrating. Aside from the narrator I would have give this 5 stars. I will say that by the last part he had improved from a one star to a two. Michael Pritchard would have been the best but even Scott Brick would have been a dramatic improvement.

Like the lovechild of Stephen Hawkins & a telephone answering machine. This narrator is more robotic than a child's robot toy. It's unbearable. I read the book and it is superb, but I can't get past the first 20 minutes of this awful, dead drone.

1 star - only because I had to tick the damned box.

If this had been my first audiobook, I would never buy another.

Such a shame

I just can't listen to this recording. The narrator reads it in such a dull monotone voice it's impossible to get into the story. Chapters back and forth but unless you are listening very carefully you would not notice as there is no gap in between them. I am sure the book is great but the narration is the worst I have heard, I will make sure I buy no other books read by the same person.

Great recording - appalling edting!

Whilst John MacDonald does a very good job with the character voices and the telling of the story, the editing of this audiobook lets it down. Sentences, paragraphs and chapters sometimes almost merge together causing some confusion when the scene, location of stroy thread changes.

This, along with Executive Orders, are 2 BRILLIANT Jack Ryan books.

Could not bear to listen- Narration was terrible

Would you try another book written by Tom Clancy or narrated by John MacDonald?

I am agreat fan of Tom Clancy books, but the experience with the narration of this book is enough to put me off

What didn’t you like about John MacDonald’s performance?

This is the worst narration of an audio book that I have ever heard. In fairness to John MacDonald, it may not be his fault. It sounds as if he has been asked to record several thousand single words, for reconstruction into an audio book by computer. If this is not infact what has happened then his narration is truely awful.

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

I don't know I really could not listen to it

Any additional comments?

Thanks goodness for Audible's good book guarantee

Would you listen to Debt of Honor again? Why?

Clancy has a great talent for running several sub-plots at the same time. It gives the reader some great variety.

Would you listen to another book narrated by John MacDonald?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Right at the end when Congress is smashed up by a plane.

very dissapointed

The narration spoilt what I think would have been a good story, I kept falling asleep with the monotonous drone of the narrator. It was a great shame, as a Tom Clancy fan I was totally let down..

Disappointed with narration

The second Tom Clancy book spoilt for me by the narrator, this one worst than the other (Executive Order). So disappointed
