Raised in the historic southern splendor of Natchez, Mississippi, Penn Cage learned all he knows of honor and duty from his father, Dr. Tom Cage. But now the beloved family doctor has been accused of murdering Viola Turner, the African-American nurse with whom he worked in the dark days of the 1960s. Penn is determined to save his father, but Tom, stubbornly invoking doctor-patient privilege, refuses to even speak in his own defense.

Penn's quest for the truth sends him deep into his father's past, where a sexually charged secret lies waiting to tear their family apart. This long-buried sin is only a single thread in a conspiracy of greed and murder involving the vicious Double Eagles, an offshoot of the KKK. Penn is forced to confront the most wrenching dilemma of his life: Does a man of honor choose his father or the truth?

Drenched in southern atmosphere, Natchez Burning marks the brilliant return of a genuine American master of suspense. Tense, disturbing, and filled with electrifying plot twists, this novel commences the most explosive and ambitious story Greg Iles has ever written.

Would you consider the audio edition of Natchez Burning to be better than the print version?

I do a lot of driving and not much free time for reading. Audio Books makes the driving tolerable and go by faster

What three words best describe David Ledoux’s voice?

Voice was OK, but not as animated or able to make you see different characters with inflections or changes

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Some of the characters' sarcastic remarks hit home and made me laugh. There were parts that were extremely sad.

Any additional comments?

I loved Greg Iles books and this one kept me on edge and I could not wait to get back to it....UNTIL, the last chapter. I appreciated the length and often look for long audio books. I become attached to character and enjoy the story, but it seems as if he got tired of writing and just wanted to wrap up the book. I was left feeling cheated. I needed more questions answered. I only hope there is a sequel that will answer all those questions

Love the Characters

Good story line. It is 15 hrs too long. Character development aside it needs editing. The final scenes took 4 hours to play out. This could be a five star read. See if there is an abridged version.

Too loooong

I will admit...when I downloaded the first book, I was intimidated by how long it was. However, this trilogy is fantastic. (I say that as I have only an hour left in the last part). This is a great story about family and what we are willing to do to protect each other and pay for our sins. Well worth the many hours!

Great story!

The fourth Penn Cage book is the first in a trilogy. I already liked the author and some of the main characters. NATCHEZ BURNING did not disappoint! I'll start THE BONE TREE today.

Great listen!

Listening to this book was like binging a good Netflix series! I really loved it.

Disturbing, but important story demanding to be told. Fast paced, intense action. Stick with it. The narration is brilliant.

Great story. Outstanding narration.

The ratings were good so I thought I would try it. The story was easy to get into however after a while it started to repeat the same information over and it drags it out. Then it went off on a tangent that seems like it will come back around to the orriginal theme but ends abruptly without answering any of the orriginal questions. I always have to finish my books but I struggled on this one. The only really good part was that it is one of my favorite narrators. I was disappointed.

started strong but lacked follow through

Most entertaining novel I have read in quite awhile. Timing was impecable since I had just started to emerse myself in the black experience, post reconstruction. Anyone who disparages this work is clearly swayed by an inability to acknowledge this dark period in America's history, and it's continued effects on 21st century America.

Loved it

I've listened to the entire series up to this point and love the style of Greg Iles but this reader had me hating this book. I will not listen to another book by this reader again.

The reader was aweful.
