Publisher's Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Moshfegh, read by Julia Whelan.

From the Man Booker-shortlisted author of Eileen.

The New York Times best seller.

It’s the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

Our narrator has many of the advantages of life: young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, she lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like everything else, by her inheritance. But there is a vacuum at the heart of things, and it isn’t just the loss of her parents in college, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her alleged best friend.

Blackly funny, both merciless and compassionate - dangling its legs over the ledge of 9/11 - My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a showcase for the gifts of one of America’s major young writers.

Critic Reviews

"Savage, funny, frequently on the verge of teetering into lunacy...My Year of Rest and Relaxation is a non-negotiable in your holiday carry-on this summer." (Vogue)

Bizarre but intoxicating and compelling

The performance is brilliant, and it matches the benignly self centered main character. I have never found this unsympathetic a character this compelling before.

Interesting but drags on for too long

The novel seem to drag on forever, which is a shame. The premise and main character of the book are well crafted but the overall message of the story is diluted by the endless repetition of the same events. The feelings evoked by the main character’s self-destruction and self-hate would left a much stronger impression on me if the writing had been more concise and the novel considerably shorter.

The narration was great.

Excellent narration, interesting idea

Well I found this really interesting and listened to it all in a day. The story drags a bit in the middle but the whole story feels very real emotionally. Narrator is excellent. It's a bit like Americian Psycho in style with added bitterness.

Different, not for me

This book is a departure from my normal books. It was interesting enough but I think maybe a bit close to the bone for my tastes. I found it difficult to sympathise with the main character at all, or the other characters in the book. Not an easy read as the subject matters can be quite heavy however very well written. Just not for me.

Read it

I loved this book. It’s so odd, dark but funny. I can’t wait to read another from Otessa Moshfegh and the narrator is just brilliant.

I slept through this book

Ironically, I think I slept through this book, it was so lethargic and uninteresting, I don’t want to read from the perspective of some dumb-ass privileged-af bitch who wants to numb her life and sleep through everything and YES the 9/11 thing seemed strange and stupid and I hated it. Waste of my time, waste of your time.

Very engaging , overall I really enjoyed it!

I didn't have high expectations because of some of the reviews, however I thoroughly enjoyed this book and was hooked on every word. The narration was just perfect. Yes I can understand how some people find the concept self indulgent but looking beyond that there is depth to what the character is doing. it also explores the disturbing depths of complacency, despair and chronic depression/apathy. Who hasn't ever thought what I would do for a year off in total peace and bliss??? Well this character did it albeit in a very non conventional way. Pretty funny some of the crazy sht she gets up to. I loved the raw honesty and some of the underlying themes which I'm still working out...

gave up in chapter two so can't really comment

I just feel like there are much more interesting, beautiful or creativity written things to fill my head with. this was a bit melodramatic and self involved.

Brilliant

I loved it. After reading other reviews before I purchased, I expected to hate the protagonist but I actually felt very sorry for her. It was a sad story but very intriguing. Loved the ending. I finished it in a day. I will read more by this author definitely.
