Publisher's summary

In the ruthless world of cultivation, one man refuses to play by the rules.

When Yao Shen, Patriarch of the Heavenly Sky Sect, ascends and regains memories of his past life on Planet Earth, he realizes that he can no longer allow himself to accept the cruel and violent ways of Eliria, the realm of cultivation.

So he decides to change it.

It was time to found a new sect. One based on the values of honor and equality over senseless violence and discrimination. A sect where all, from the mortal farmer’s son to a sect elder's daughter, were held accountable to the same rules.

Welcome to the Modern Sect.

Don't miss the start of this unique xianxia progression fantasy epic perfect for fans of The First Law of Cultivation, Beware of Chicken, and Cradle. Join a cultivator who is already at the peak of his power, but now must learn to evolve so that he may forge a better world.

About the Series: Filled with detailed world building, martial arts action, multi-faceted characters, an overpowered but rational main character, magic and more, it's everything you love about cultivation yet with a fresh point a view!

Good start

There are some cool concepts in this book. It was novel having the protagonist starting well along his cultivation path instead of the beginning. Because of this there is a lot of exposition in the beginning of the book to bring us up to speed. There are some pretty awesome fight scenes throughout the book. The narrator did a good job.

A nice deconstruction of the cultivation genre

What I disliked:
The story is more than a bit exposition heavy. I'm not one to get bent out of shape when it comes to exposition but even for me this was a bit much. It was also difficult to keep track of the point of views, tho that is likely my English speaking sensibilities making it difficult to keep track of the names.

What I liked:
The Grand Patriarch is a very human character. He is not some one dimensional caracature of a man. The story asks some rather thought provoking questions concerning why in a world of magic and such long history things are not better and the conclusions are both fascinating and sensible.

Great pacing

So what's cool about this story is that it kind of jumps ahead compared to most progression fantasy stories. We meet the MC at a point where he's already strong, and he's breaking through to be the biggest fish in his pond. There's bigger fish out there, but that's for future books. Anyways ...as the baddest guy in town, our guy starts the process of "modernizing" his neck of the woods. We also get to see him figure out his new power level.
There's lots of good stuff in there. I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I like the pacing of the story a lot. The come-up story is fun, n there's still a bunch of progress left for the MC in this story ...but some stories just have u waiting for MC to be strong enough to do stuff ...in this story MC can start doing stuff off the jump ...it's not the most novel idea ever, but I think it made for good story-telling, n I definitely enjoyed it

Different

Loved the world building and in-depth dive into a new world of cultivation. I enjoyed the different angle this took over many others and can’t wait to see where it goes. The only con I can see is that there wasn’t much combat.

Basic. Entertaining but not exciting.

Nothing really to write home about here, nothing super exciting, nothing new, the moral modern cultivator is a common enough deconstruction of the genre that its basically becoming its own genre similar to how farming cultivation novels have,

Biggest gripe has to be the not ordering names correctly, to the point where I wasn't sure if the author knew the given name comes second, combined with the use of KM instead of Li, its hard to believe otherwise.

Hearing Ralph Lister do a cultivation novel was fun.

Not something I would recommend to a first time reader of the genre, but good enough for anyone who loves xianxia and needs something to listen to.

New and great cultivation

Sect building at its best. Good writing. Perfect narration! Book two? I am all in.

Not Bad

It’s mostly all political maneuvering and base building. The cultivation was lightly sprinkled in there. I mean that it was just set in the world of cultivation and sects. I’m not mad I got it but I’m probably not getting the next one . The characters aren’t compelling and the overall plot isn’t that interesting

Laid a good foundation

The book over all was good. It laid a good foundation and I can see the next few being better. This book was a bit boring though, the narrator is great, but has a soothing voice which is this case just adds to it. 🤷🏻‍♂️ still a good book and I look forward to the next one.

so bland and boring

This is quite possibly the most boring cultivation novel I've ever read or listened to. The Human Dao? It's about as dumb as it sounds. The MC's power is basically low level empathy. There is very little story and a whole lot of over explanation of literally everything.
