Publisher's Summary

The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder to cover the tab.

That’s when they call me. My name is Opal Yong-ae, and I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage with an art history degree who’s employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one - there’s a reason I wear bite-proof gloves - but when you’re deep in debt in a lawless city where gods are real, dragons are traffic hazards, and buildings move around on their own, you don’t get to be picky about where your money comes from. You just have to make it work, even when the only thing of value in your latest repossessed apartment is the dead body of the mage who used to live there.

Author’s note: This is the first in a new series set in the same universe as my Heartstrikers books, but you don’t need to have heard those stories to enjoy this one. Minimum Wage Magic was written to stand by itself, so if you haven’t listened to the others, don’t worry! I wrote this book with you in mind. Thank you so much for listening!

The DFC is back

I miss the Heartstrikers! I must sadly say that there are no cameos. But people from the series are mentioned. Yes I kept hoping someone would pop up, even if it had made no sense. Cos I miiiiiss them!

But to this book then. Opal is a cleaner. She cleans out places and sell the good stuff. She studied magic at College, but she needs money, and fast. It takes a while to learn why. She also has a troubled family relationship (I was sort of right, but not quite.) She just wants to do her own thing and I can respect that.

She also has the coolest AI sidekick called Sybil, who is in her phone, or whatever electronics she can be in.

I do not want to say too much about the story, but there is a magical mystery to solve. And she will have help.

The DFZ is such a freaky place, and the story never gets boring. But yes I missed the old gang. Who wouldn't! I also really wonder if the next book is about Opal too or someone new...I certainly look forward to more! It was a good book, and I hope it will be as great as a certain other series

Narrator
I have only listened to her once before and I think that was goo. Now Emily brought in another world and I felt she was Opal. Since all those others I have talked about, well to hear their voices I would have to hear THE voice.

Fun, exciting.

Fantastic in every way

From the story to the narration, this book was EXCELLENT!

Great, well developed characters and a super cool world for them to traverse. I'm looking forward to the next book in the series.

loved the story, would have liked a little more variety in the voices of the supplementary characters.

Back to the DFZ

I am so glad this book brought me back to the DFZ. It is a truly wondrous, sometimes terrifying place. Opal and her peculiar circumstances made for a very interesting listen. Hoping the next book is out soon.

GOOD START.

Interesting though I wish a bit more of the Heartstrikers are involved too. Anyway Opal has a strong character though she sounded rather with her behaviour set times. The beginning was a bit slow but the action caught quite fast. Emily Woo Zeller narrated/performed well. Of course Rachel Aaron is a very talented writer. I hope book two will come out soon. Most enjoyable.

them features seems like she was too dumb for me you tell me all your life you had access to high-level trainer than you went to University and you have a master's degree in magic and all you can do is grab magic and throw another ball really

Awesome book

I Loved the Heartstrikers series and was excited to see the next adventures set in the DFZ. This is a very fast paced book and I couldn’t putt it down!!!

Opal finds herself in several sticky situations with many twist and turns.
I can’t wait to see what happens next.

great story

An entertaining audiobook that is well read and has some interesting characters. The only issue I had was with the male voices as sometimes it was hard to tell which character was supposed to be talking.
