Publisher's Summary

Conor Maguire and his daughter, Barb, planned to weather the apocalypse by keeping to themselves, hidden from the world in their compound deep in the Appalachian Mountains. Their approach failed, allowing bad men to get too close and kidnap Barb. After rescuing her in a violent bloodbath that decimated the kidnappers, Conor realized it was time to enlist his community to work together to improve their security. They had better work fast.

Unbeknownst to Conor, the kidnappers he killed had a boss, and he’s none too happy about the loss of his men. He’s marching in their direction and building an army as he goes, determined to find this Mad Mick who everyone is talking about and hang his head from a stick.

I LOVE THE MAD MICK!!!

Such a great story once again! I hope we get another Mad Mick adventure! I caught a few hints to A Borrowed World/Locker 9 in this one.. so I'm very hopeful for all 3 series! Honestly, I will read anything Franklin writes! Just add his entire library to your cart and one click it! Awesome Narration by Kevin Pierce also.. he is just so easy to listen too.. Love this writer/narrator combo!

Interesting book, irritating character (Barb)

I enjoyed the first book. Some good action, an evil man it was easy to want to see lose and the usual preppier family that has loads of everything imaginable. That aspect usually bothers me, and relegates the book to primarily an entertainment exercise and not really combined with learning anything. In Book 2 we see the Mad Mick household taking on some new guests. I won’t give any spoilers so I’ll lesve it at that. I have to admit though the character Barb is nothing short of a huge pain. She’s got a chip on her shoulder the size of Texas and seems to go out of her way to be rude. To EVERYONE. As I stand here writing this (even while listening to the book) I simply cannot recall Barb having a look for someone that isn’t withering, indifferent, icy, or her commentary just plain ol’ rude. If she’s trying to be some kind of a bad*** or what I do not know, I can just say I’m already I tired of her character. I’m sure that the end of the world will produce some bad attitudes, but a constant lashing out at people and the staring them down challenging the person to call her out on her rudeness just gets old - and I’m only on chapter 12. I started getting tired of the character by chapter 6.
That said Franklin weaves an interesting story, as always and I do not regret buying this audio book.

Started Good but. . .

I really liked it at first but a couple hours into it this Barb character really wears thin, The author is trying to make her a bad-ass chick but she's so over the top that the reader winds up hoping she gets killed off somehow. From a practical standpoint, her character was so uncontrollable that she would have been a tactical liability, not an asset.

What made me stop listening before the end was some really stupid thinking on the part of the main character, Conner. Stop reading here if you don't want certain plot twists revealed but when Conner allows the main bad guy to live when they captured him was simply stupid. Cut the head off and the snake dies, smite the shepherd and sheep scatter, and so on. This evil army existed solely because the main bad guy. Killing him would have scattered his army. A few may have broken into bands & turned into bandits but those could have been dealt with far easier than an army of men following a clever and evil leader. Duh.

As much as I like this author's work overall, he is a good writer, he seems to have ran out of ideas or simply followed a wrong path in his imagination.

Don't mess with the Mad Mick!

Once again the Mad Mick demonstrates his ability to track down and deal with anyone who threatens his friends or family. His friends now residing in his compound add a level of irritations not only with the Mick, but Barb as well. Barb is a volcano with constant rumblings. The only negative part of the book, for me at least, is Barb's constant volatility. Finding out about the Mick's past with his friend adds more to his story and endears him even more. I would hope for more of the Mick, providing Barb stops trying to kill anyone who happens to say something she doesn't agree with. ;)

What makes this series!

So there a lot of good book series out there but personally I’m to busy to read but I like a good book, so I use audible. Audible in itself is great but the biggest issue for me is who narrates them. I’ve read a few great books but when I go to listen to them the narrator is all wrong. It’s like the just read the words on the paper and nothing more. This narrator Kevin Pierce is the best I’ve heard so far. It’s like he’s a fan of the author or read the book before and you can hear it when he speaks. He sets the tone and he does a great job! Also most of Franklin Hortons book are awesome. They all connect in some way which keeps the story fresh while still retaining the original book concept. Keep it up!

mad mick

what can I say , I love Kevin Peirce narration but if Conner lived in the US since he was a boy the Irish accent would have been watered down with an American one and Barb would not have had an Irish accent as she was born and bred in the US .
but the Irish accent from Kevin Peirce was terrible
as it also was a wrong Accent as the accent used was a Dublin Accent, well us in Northern Ireland
have a different one the accent we speak is more the Liam Neeson or Roma Downy or indeed Rory McIlroy .
Connors political view is different from the majority
of his fellow Irish men in Northern Ireland.but it showed not the romantic picture that most IRA men have but the way they murder innocent old lady's who helped a dying human being not on his one pass from this life .
I myself was a home service British Soldier who served all through the troubles and have seen hate from Republicans . which was showed by Connors grandfather .
the book was excellent really good loved it .
just wanted to keep listening to cant wait for the 3rd
not.
