Critic Reviews

"Teenage and adult fans alike will rejoice that Carriger retains her flair for musical prose, over-the-top names, clever wit, and strange yet helpful mechanical devices of all kinds. Carriger's blend of comically exaggerated characters and madcap action will easily win over readers once again." ( Publishers Weekly)

A happy ending.

I've binged listened to this series. I have enjoyed them more than I anticipated. And I was completely surprised and pleased that the series ended with such a big adventure and "happy ending."
I love the adventure, I love the nonsensical, I love the female heroes.
Good fun if you ask me!

Almost perfect.

A fabulous end to yet another beyond amusing series by Gail Carrigar. The almost comes from Moira's depiction of Lord Akeldama. I really wish she'd listened to how his voice was done in the parasol protectorate series (which was awesome) and mimicked that (which I feel was spot on). Moira's depiction of one of the best characters made me cringe every time he spoke. I never got used to it and it really detracted from the series. Otherwise a great book I'd recommend to anyone who likes to laugh and enjoys a rollicking good adventure.

One of my absolute favorite writers and a new favorite book

The narrator is amazing as always. And Miss Carringer told the story beautifully with her words. I love the way she brings you into the world of steampunk London. She tied the ending in amazingly well with the Parasol Protectorate series. I am still left with wanting more. I love all the wonderful characters. I MUST HAVE MORE!!!!!

Superb Audible Narration

This has been one of my favorite series in recent years - mostly due to the Audible narration, which is superb. Sadly, this completes the Finishing School, though of course there are many other books in this world to explore. I found the denouement here fun and consistent with the previous books and definitely smiled/chuckled as much throughout. This is by no means perfect - but great fun regardless. And the ending segues perfectly into the Parasol Protectorate series.

Sophronia is still frustrated - both by developments at her school and also to the nature of her relationship with Soot. But the picklemen have become daring and look to be one step away from hatching their plans to take over the world!

So yes, mustache twirling bad girls and their nefarious schemes! The whole series has been fun but it really is a very inspired Audible version narration that elevates this and the other books so immensely. If anyone had ever wondered how a narration can make a book better, they should definitely check out the Finishing School series. There were so many witticisms that I would have missed otherwise but the narrator was able to voice perfectly. As well, many subtleties and nuances from the writing that would have gone unnoticed otherwise.

As with so many steampunk-inspired stories, I found the romance cloying and getting in the way of a great story. Ironic, really, because I am a heavy romance reader and typically prefer them in my books. Sophronia's romance with Soot was well done and I appreciated the growth arc given to both characters. But it was the steamships and evil geniuses that made the story for me.

In all, a wonderful set of books that I thoroughly enjoyed. And one of the best narrations to be found in that category as well.

Representation and Personality!

I love that the main couple is interracial! Soap is life, he's so cool and kind, and every lady spy is fantastic! I love all the female friendship and regard too, it's such a good end to the series

Wow, what a series!

I know this series is supposed to be for YA, but I enjoyed these books completely--and I'm a grandma. They are funny, fresh, and intelligently written. Gail Carriger took subject matter that's been written about over and over and over and somehow made it new. This is the end of the series, but I wish it was going to continue. Well, I guess I will just have to listen to all the books over again.

Most enjoyable I've heard in a long time!

It's like a steampunk Harry Potter with capable and interesting female protagonists. Loved everything about it! The reader is excellent too.

Much too GOOD for children

Exceptional performance. No cord left unraveled. Entirely immersed and sad to be "Finished!"

Finished in the best way possible.

I am saddened to have the series end but so excited to fall in love with the story and characters again and again as I relisten over, and over.
