Publisher's Summary

A frothy, romantic adventure with a hint of old New York glamour and a dash of magic.

Jilted at the altar, small-town librarian Claire is forced to go on her romantic honeymoon in New York City alone. After enduring one too many meals for two as one, Claire invites a seemingly harmless little old lady to join her for afternoon tea at the Plaza. Unbeknownst to Claire, said little old lady is actually a grand wizard, who bestows Claire with a magical amulet that makes her the sitting queen of the magical community. Claire is swept into the gilded world of New York City wizards - and a bitter power struggle for the throne. With the help of a cursed former prince, Claire must untangle this web of deception and find the magical community’s rightful leader before her "honeymoon" is over.

Editor's Pick

When your superpower is research
"I absolutely adored this charming story about a suburban librarian named Claire who, despite being jilted at the altar, decides to use her honeymoon trip to explore a big city famous for its arts culture, historic sites...and undercover magical community (!). Claire, whose Texas-tinged voice is narrated wonderfully by Karissa Vacker, gets tangled up with wizards who take her on an unintentional journey of intrigue, self-discovery, and potential romance. She learns first-hand how power—including supernatural powers—can corrupt, but when used wisely can also restore one’s confidence and ability to help the commonwealth. The many nods to book lovers was a bonus. If you're craving a feel-good listen for the new year, this is it."—Valerie B., Audible Editor

Editor pick

Picked this up from the editors recommendations. It’s a great quick listen. I listen on my commute, but I was so drawn in by the story that I listened to it throughout the day (only stopping when I realized I fell asleep and missed several chapters). Definitely recommend.

Cringe

DNF. This is the female MC that stars in old horror movies who Always. Goes. In. The. Basement. And her rationalized motives are so weak that she could also be a 70’s sitcom female actor who makes the idiotic decisions to create drama. She needs an. SSDGM intervention. And I need to listen to something I am not wincing every time this not-2019 woman ignores her instincts.

Not my cup of magic

I listened to this on the recommendation of Audible editors, but it just didn’t resonate with me. I was by turns bored and confused by the nonsensical choices the main character made.

Love, love, loved it

This book was precious and delightful. It wasn't strictly a romance. It was a mystery and a fantasy and a romance all in one. I really enjoyed it. Listening to it was uplifting and calming. It felt like a breath of fresh air. Swendson creates alluring and honest characters. I love the way she offers insight into the main character's thought process while also balancing the inner monologue with outward action. Every scene had a purpose. Nothing was there, "just because". I definitely plan to read her other books!

Casual and light listen

It's a pretty unique story, and pretty light. Very casual and easy to listen to. It's not overly romantic, and the magic elements are cool. The narrator was pretty decent.

I hope this is just the start, I want more

I loved this, a librarian as the heroine perfect!

When odd things start happening on your non honeymoon and you find your life is changing, you can panic or go with the flow. Is it really magic? You want to understand stuff, to know what's happening, just research it. That's exactly what Claire did, she used her skills and found life was so much more special than she ever thought..
