Just eh

It’s OK for a free listen, but I will not be wasting a credit on the second book in the series. I’m not sure the author has ever even been to New Orleans. It was just wrong. The main character is new to New Orleans, and her friend who’s an old timer brings her a cheeseburger. If you’re in Nola, do not waste a single calorie on a cheeseburger. It is the place of amazing food and amazing music! She never even mentioned the music. But the cheeseburger thing killed me. She should’ve brought her shrimp étouffée or a Poboy of any meat or a beignet. Never a cheeseburger in Nola!

The characters and story are interesting but the story lacks substance. I'll get the next book to see if it improves.

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Better story, better narrator.

What was most disappointing about Katerina Martinez’s story?

To be fair, I didn't make it all the way to the end, but I made it to Chapter 34, so I feel I gave it a real chance. Though it certainly wasn't helped by the narrator, whose voice had a little-girl quality, the writing itself struck me as a bit sophomoric. The characters were flat and uninteresting. By Chapter 34, I still really didn't care about any of them--even the main character--and the lead male didn't earn my interest, or my affections. Also, that first sex scene was eye-roll-worthy; not only was it decidedly un-titillating, but it seemed incredibly formulaic, with little to distinguish it from any other generic sex scene.

What didn’t you like about Carly Robins’s performance?

Carly Robin's voice is just not to my liking. It interfered with my listening of the story; that is, I never stopped paying attention to her voice and just got lost in the story. Truthfully, that not only speaks to her voice, but it also reflects the weakness of the writing, because it's possible that a truly powerful story could have made me forget about the narrator's annoying voice.
