Publisher's summary

"Why did this happen to me?" Donna Andersen could not understand why a narcissistic, sociopathic con man came into her life and smashed it to pieces. Looking for answers, she learned that sociopaths have no heart, conscience, or remorse - and sometimes, we engage with them for our own spiritual growth.

Love Fraud tells two parallel stories. The first is the outrageous true story of Donna’s marriage to James Alwyn Montgomery, originally of Sydney, Australia. Montgomery took a quarter million dollars from her, cheated with at least six women during a two-and-a-half-year relationship, had a child with one of them, and 10 days after Andersen left him, married the mother of the child. It was the second time he committed bigamy.

The second story reveals Donna's personal spiritual journey. Seeking to understand why her life was ravaged, Donna developed an ability to channel spiritual guidance and learned that her soul planned the entire debacle. The object of the exercise was for her to experience and then release the devastating betrayal, so that she could return to wholeness.

"Love Fraud is a fine read with intriguing ideas; highly recommended." (5 stars, Midwest Book Review)

Love Fraud is a work of nonfiction, but it is written with the lush description, empathetic character development, and dramatic tension of a novel.

If you have suffered the devastation of a sociopath, Love Fraud is a comfort, like sharing your experience with a close and loyal friend. The story will help you realize that you’re not alone, and there is a way out.

If you’ve been lucky enough to avoid sociopaths so far, Love Fraud will teach you that evil sometimes comes disguised as love. You’ll learn the warning signs, so if you start to see them, you’ll know to keep the heartless predator out of your life.

Narration feels choppy.

I could relate to quite a bit in this book. I do think this book would have been easier to listen to if a professional narrator was used. The author narrates it and it feels choppy and stilted. I tried listening at different speeds and it wasn't any easier.

There's also a strong bias towards the so called law of attraction, aka magical thinking, which sounds like blaming the victim. My thoughts didn't attract my sociopathic husband, my empathy and compassion did.

Another example of magical thinking is the author's interactions with 'Guidance' her spirit guides. Multiple times throughout the book these guides outright lie to her and she rationalizes these lies as being for her higher good. It sounds exactly like how she rationalizes James treatment of her before she caught on to his con.

Lies from spirit beings or anybody else are still lies and call into question everything else they say. Rationalizing lies is an open door for abusive spirits /people /whomever else to walk through and take advantage of you. It shows that your boundaries are still too porous and need work if you want to keep yourself safe from predators.

Just OK

The book is far too long. There are way too many boring details. You don't even find out who the sociopath is until around chapter 6. The background sound effects are awful and distracting. Her reading is choppy. There are many pauses where pauses should not be. Her spiritual journey into new age magical thing took her down the wrong path. She received nothing but bad advice from her spiritual guides. Had she sought out a professional counselor/therapist, she could have recognized the red flags and gotten out of the relationship sooner. Having said that, she seems like a person with a very big heart. I am sorry she went through that painful experience.

Long

I can't believe I listened to the whole 31 hours but I did the 30 sec skip a ton and I speeded it up to 4X speed. It was like a train wreck that I couldn't stop watching, not believing anyone could be this naive or desperate for love to fall for this flim flam man as well as falling for the "Guide" who kept giving Donna the wrong information and then saying "they had a reason to mislead" and Elaine, not telling Donna STOP with this guy. And the mystic telling her James had $6,000,000 hidden away and Donna believed her!! Come on...if a man asks for money and you want to be generous and you can afford to, give it as a gift and run! And the sound effects, keyboard clanking for the thousands of email readings, annoying!
Should have been edited and all the tiny tiny details cut out, way too much!
I'm glad if Donna can help other women out there and if this book and her blog help them then good for her. You may want to listen and you'll find it unbelievable and so strange that you will listen to the whole book, as I did.

Riveting novel! I couldn't put it down!

Love Fraud is an amazing story! Listening to the author tell her story of finding out that her husband was not the man whom she thought she married was just heart wrenching. Yet, when Ms. Andersen's fears were confirmed, she had the courage to share her story and she has helped so many others by doing so.Thank you, Ms. Andersen!!
