Resumen del Editor

“Am I the only one who sees this - am I just imagining things? Is something wrong with me...or could this be abuse?”

Maybe you don’t know for sure: all you know is something feels off when you think about a certain relationship or interaction with an institution or organization. You feel alone and confused - but calling it “abuse” feels extreme and unsettling, a label for what happens to other people but not you. Yet you can’t shake the feeling: something’s not right.

In his debut book, researcher and advocate Wade Mullen introduces us to the groundbreaking world of impression management - the strategies that individuals and organizations utilize to gain power and cover up their wrongdoings. Mullen reveals a pattern that accompanies many types of abuse, almost as if abusers are somehow reading from the same playbook. If we can learn to decode these evil methods - if we can learn the language of abuse - we can help stop the cycle and make abusers less effective at accomplishing destruction in our lives.

Something’s Not Right will help you to identify and describe tactics that were previously unidentifiable and indescribable, and give you the language you need to move toward freedom and create a safer future for yourself and others.

Life changing

This book describes the dismantling of a victim when faced with a system that wants to cover a secret; oftentimes a dark secret. As someone who has experienced this phenomenon it was very soothing. Done with heart and compassion.

Insight upon insight

For those questioning if they are in an abusive or unhealthy situation or relationship, Wade Mullen’s excellent book, “Something’s Not Right”, is the go-to resource for answering that question.

Written with compassion, gentleness, courage, and insight, Mullen draws upon years of research to expose the tactics of abusers and provides helpful next-steps to confront and escape abuse.

Mullen narrates his own book, and his quiet, consistent narration displays genuine care and concern for those listening.

Overall, excellent content paired with excellent narration.

Every church leader/layperson should read this to ensure that abuse is not happening in their organization or understanding how to appropriately respond to abuse when it is exposed.

Emotional and spiritual abuse matters

I am not new to the concept of emotional and spiritual abuse, but Something’s Not Right is a good introductory book on abuse. It is not only about abuse within the church; many examples are within a church or broadly Christian context.

I think Something’s Not Right has a dual focus of validating those that have been abused and who are trying to understand their abuse and seek healing. And at the same time, it is written for Christian leaders who are seeking to prevent and/or be a healing place for those who have been abused. That dual focus mostly works because, in the direct talk toward the abused, leaders can listen in to that discussion so that they can understand abuse better. But there are differences in how that discussion might be better focused on those two groups.

This is intended to be an introductory book. There are other places to go for more depth and nuance. Anne Marie Miller’s book on how churches help those that have been sexually abused Healing Together: A Guide to Supporting Sexual Abuse Survivors is one of several books about that particular issue. Trauma in the Pews is about how trauma and abuse (especially developmental trauma and abuse) impact spiritual formation. The Body Keeps Score is a classic book on trauma from a secular viewpoint.

Shining the light into the dark places

I very much appreciate the exposure of abuse of power in it's many forms and good advice on how to deal with it and recognize genuine repentance. Well done.

Very informative and helpful

This book is a good read for anyone involved in an organization where something just doesn’t seem right. It helps you clarify issues and know what can be done to help correct them. I enjoyed the authors narration because he was genuinely wanting others to be helped by the information in his book.

Opinions of men

This book is based on the opinions of men. It has little to do with Gods Word and is tilted towards a liberal bias. The writer agrees with much of the zeitgeist and rhetoric of the world. While not everything he says is wrong it is not written from the perspective of Jesus Christ and His Word. Mullins views digress significantly from wisdom of the Word. Later he gets political speaking against Trump by saying his “fake news” phrase is abuse. I don’t recommend this book. Bully Pulpit is a far better book on abuse in the Church.
