Never having watched the series, I don't have that to compare with, but, I have to say, this is the most fun I have had reading a scifi anthology like this in a long while. It is very reminiscent of classic Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction magazines, from like the 80s, and early 90s. The diverse variety and excellent writing showcased here kept it fun and unpredictable all the way through with enough action and kick to keep you reading on through. I loved it so much, I've got volumes 2 and 3 to start now as soon as I finish this review. The narrators here helped the experience become a blockbuster piece of work that will be hard to top. I can't name everybody here, but you guys, every one of you, made this a phenomenal reading experience. Thank you!! One happy reader here. Thanks again. Enjoy guy, and happy reading!!

The best scifi in a long while.

Big fan of the Netflix series, especially this season and wanted to look at the source material. Was not disappointed. Suits, Sonnies Edge, Secret War and Marlo Kloos stories were standouts for me as was beyond the Aquila drift. Would recommend this collection to anyone.

Great collection but some were better than others

Overall, I enjoyed it. Just like the show. Not every story is a winner. Peanut butter

This short story collection consists of eighteen tales that span the spectrum of sci-fi. Some tales are extremely short and pithy as well as a smattering of humorous stories. Each tale is extremely satisfying.

The narration is handled by a full cast with excellent renditions. Pacing is smooth.

I am late to the party and didn’t realize there’s an on-screen series, of which Volume 1 came out in 2019. Having listened to this and then gone and watched these shorts on screen, I’d say this is still a solid book, with easily more than half of the shorts being great listens, Mixing both formats, however, really separates the wheat from the chaff.

For example, compare the only two shorts clocking in at over an hour. Alastair Reynolds’s Beyond the Aquila Rift goes from 1 hr 24 min in book form to 17 min on screen; both formats are great, painting Reynolds’s phantasmagorical prose into a masterpiece in your mind. Steve Lewis’s Suits, however, delivered a bland farmers vs alien invasion story over 1 hr 16 min in book form but was elevated into a pulpy, B-movie style shoot em up that didn’t stay out its welcome at 17 min on-screen.

Or, take Joe Lansdale’s two offerings: one (The Dump) was fun in print and on-screen whereas the other (Fish Night) benefited greatly from the on-screen translation.

There’s a Table of Contents clearly labeling each short and author, facilitating discovery of new authors. I’ll be looking up Marko Kloos based on both of his offerings, although Lucky 13 was best enjoyed on-screen. Final analysis: I’ve found myself both a book and on-screen series to follow.
